United sources do not expect Gabriel to return to their Carrington training complex or play for the club again. Club insiders have scoffed at the prospect of Gabriel moving to Real Madrid, where youth players have historically struggled for a pathway to the first team. United were also aware of Gabriel’s long-time attraction to Barcelona, which dates back at least five years. Gabriel visited Catalonia when he was 11 and returned there in the summer. Gabriel would have to resume education if or when he moves abroad. He has been home schooled in recent years while he has developed at the United academy. Fifa rules stipulate that Gabriel’s next club must “guarantee academic, school and/or vocational education or training in addition to football development, so the player can pursue a career outside football if necessary”.
