Sunderland are said to have fought off stiff competition from other clubs to sign the full-back. Methalie started 22 times in Ligue 1 for Toulouse last season, scoring twice and assisting once. He first joined the club in 2014 when he was eight and has emerged as one of their brightest prospects in recent years. The defender helped Toulouse come ninth in the French top flight during his breakout year for the club. Methalie would have been only the second signing for Sunderland this summer. The experienced star has 83 caps for Belgium and previously starred for Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain. Meunier said he was impressed with the club’s ambition after qualifying for the Europa League. It will be the club’s first season back in Europe for 53 years. He said: “I’m very happy to be here and to begin this new chapter in my careeer. “The Premier League is one of the most competitive and exciting leagues in the world, and it’s a challenge I’ve wanted to experience. “When I spoke with the club, I was impressed by the ambition, the project and the desire to keep moving forward.
