Sun Pharma gets Brazil nod for Semaglutide

Sun Pharmaceutical Industries has received Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency ANVISA approval to manufacture and market semaglutide injection in the Latin American country.The generic drugmaker plans to launch the product in the next few days in partnership with Hypera Pharma, a pharmaceutical company in Brazil. It will be available as a pre‑filled, multi‑dose injectable pen in two strengths (2 mg/1.5 mL and 4 mg/3 mL) allowing flexible, once‑weekly dosing.“The approval of semaglutide in Brazil expands access to an evidence-based treatment option for people living with inadequately controlled type 2 diabetes. It reflects the strength of our development and manufacturing capabilities,” said Aalok Shanghvi, Chief Operating Officer, Sun Pharma.The semaglutide injectable market in Brazil is around $413 million, Sun Pharma said citing IQVIA, MAT June 2026 data.Earlier this month, Sun Pharmaceutical launched generic semaglutide in South Africa following approval from the regulator in the country. The product is supplied in a pre-filled, multi-dose injectable pen in two strengths (2 mg/1.5 mL and 4 mg/3 mL) that allow flexible, once-weekly dosing, the company said. South Africa was the second market where it had launched the product, after India.Sun Pharma was among a clutch of generic drugmakers that launched semaglutide following patent expiry in March, in India. Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Novo Nordisk’s blockbuster diabetes and weight loss drugs Wegovy and Ozempic.Sun Pharma getting Brazil’s approval comes on the heels of competitor Dr. Reddy’s recently halting commercial supplies of its generic semaglutide after an issue associated with the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) used in the drug and fresh despatches were likely to resume only towards late October or early November. The development is bound to affect customers in India and Canada, said Dr. Reddy’s. The Hyderabad-based generic drugmaker was also eyeing Brazil for its semaglutide.
