Sign in to your ScreenRant account Studio Ghibli's beloved My Neighbor Totoro is returning with restocks of kitchenware from over two decades ago. My Neighbor Totoro is a near-perfect Studio Ghibli masterpiece that perfectly captures the warmth, whimsy, and craftsmanship that have been the hallmark of writer and director Hayao Miyazaki's work for decades. Those inimitable qualities are reflected in the restocked merchandise from the long-running Noritake x My Neighbor Totoro dinnerware collection. Three dinner plates from the 2005 Seasonal/Monthly collection have been restocked on Studio Ghibli's official merchandise portal, Donguri Sora. The plates feature scenes with recognizable characters like Totoro, Mei, and the Catbus amidst seasonal plants from Sayama Hills and the Musashino region broadly—the primary inspirations for Totoro's lush landscapes and forests. Each plate measures 23 centimeters (about 9.1 inches) and retails for 5,500 yen (around $35 as of the time of writing). Studio Ghibli's Restocked Totoro Plates Are Beautiful The three restocked plates are part of an initial run of six plates, with each having a seasonal plant theme representing two months out of the year. The restocked designs are Dandelion (March/April), Mock Strawberry (May/June), and Japanese Viburnum (September/October). Every design features original illustrations by the late Studio Ghibli animator Makiko Futaki, whose elegant and detailed depiction of nature would become a major component of My Neighbor Totoro's immaculate style. Each design features a swell of softly-colored greenery tracing its outside border. The Dandelion design is anchored by Totoro at the bottom, Mei atop a dandelion to the right, and the Catbus driving toward smaller Totoros at the top. The Mock Strawberry design has Mei running after a small Totoro at the bottom of the plate, the Catbus drifting around flowers along the top, and is ornamented with vibrant snake strawberries. Finally, the Japanese Viburnum design features the Catbus perched on a leaf near the top, Mei sitting alongside Totoro and a small Totoro on a log at the bottom, and clusters of dark berries all around. Together, the dishes evoke the comfortable atmosphere that has made My Neighbor Totoro Studio Ghibli's coziest film ever, balancing sublime beauty and lighthearted playfulness with the finesse that turned the film into the cinematic equivalent of comfort food for generations of fans. Studio Ghibli's Totoro Collaboration With Noritake Is Full Of Must-Buys The restocking of the plates follows a similar restocking of mugs from the Seasonal/Monthly collection earlier this year. The Seasonal/Monthly collection overall was only one part of a long-standing collaboration between Noritake and Studio Ghibli, which began in 1993. The first release of the annual My Neighbor Totoro plates came in 1997, and the Seasonal/Monthly collection would of course follow in 2005. What makes the Seasonal/Monthly collection particularly clever, though, is that it reflects Miyazaki's true goal for Totoro: reconnecting with nature in a disconnected age. The meticulous and inspired depiction of nature across the collection draws the beauty of the outside world into the home. Collectors should be aware that while the illustrations remain the same as the original 2005 collection, the reissued plates are made out of bone china rather than porcelain. Additionally, while the plates are priced at around $35 in Japan, there's a catch: Donguri Sora doesn't ship internationally. Eager collectors are able to buy the plates from Noritake's U.S. website, where each is priced at $49.99 instead. It's a premium worth considering for collectors who want to bring My Neighbor Totoro's reverence for nature and singular charm into their home for decades to come.
