Struggling to poop? Try these 5 drinks that help you poop naturally

Not being able to poop properly can leave you feeling heavy, bloated and uncomfortable. A gastroenterologist has shared five drinks that may help support digestion and regular bowel movements.Struggling to poop? Try these 5 drinksConstipation is a common problem that can make you feel uncomfortable throughout the day. When bowel movements become difficult or less frequent, people often look for quick and simple ways to get their gut moving again. While drinking enough water, eating fibre-rich foods and staying physically active are important for healthy digestion, certain drinks may also support bowel movements.Gastroenterologist Dr Saurabh Sethi has shared five drinks that may help people who are struggling with constipation. These include familiar options such as coffee and green tea, as well as fermented drinks, fruit juices and a simple chia seed drink. However, these drinks may not work in the same way for everyone, and some should be used with caution.1. BLACK COFFEE OR GREEN TEABlack coffee and green tea contain caffeine, which may stimulate the gastrocolic reflex. This is a natural response that can increase activity in the colon and may create the urge to use the toilet. However, drinking too much caffeine can cause acidity, restlessness or dehydration in some people.2. KEFIR AND BERRY SMOOTHIEA kefir and berry smoothie is another option. Kefir is a fermented drink containing probiotics that may support healthy digestion. Dr Sethi also suggests adding ingredients such as psyllium, flax seeds or hemp seeds. These are rich in fibre and may help support regular bowel movements. 3. HERBAL TEAA warm herbal tea may help stimulate the digestive system. Some herbal teas contain senna, an ingredient that works as a laxative. However, senna is meant for short-term relief and should not be used regularly without medical advice.4. PEAR OR APPLE JUICEPrune, pear and apple juices contain sorbitol, which may help with constipation. Fresh juice without added sugar is preferable. Dr Sethi recommends having a small amount rather than consuming a large quantity at once.5. CHIA FRESCA Chia fresca is made by soaking chia seeds in water. Dr Sethi suggests mixing one spoonful of chia seeds with a glass of water, cucumber slices and mint. Let it soak for around 10 to 15 minutes before drinking. A little lemon can also be added. These drinks may support digestion and bowel movements, but they are not a guaranteed or instant cure for constipation. Your overall daily habits also matter. Drinking enough fluids, eating fibre rich foods and staying physically active can all help support regular bowel movements. It is also important not to rely on laxative-containing drinks regularly, especially those containing senna, without medical advice. If constipation continues for a long time, becomes severe or keeps coming back, it is better to speak to a doctor rather than repeatedly trying home remedies. The right approach depends on what is causing the constipation in the first place.- EndsPublished By: Smarica PantPublished On: Sep 9, 2026 10:44 IST
