Street Fighter is one of the best-known gaming franchises on the planet and a juggernaut in the fighting game genre. Many of its characters are so iconic that they transcend the medium. Even some non-gamers know who Ryu and Ken are, and casual gamers can likely identify several fighters in the cast even if they've never played. Street Fighter has existed for almost four decades, with an ever-expanding roster. The franchise has also featured many villains, and the primary antagonists change between titles. For example, JP is the main villain in Street Fighter 6. Seth is the big boss in Street Fighter IV, and Gill was an overwhelming force in Street Fighter III. These villains are all infamous in their own right, but their reputations pale in comparison to M. Bison. The ruthless dictator is a legendary antagonist in Street Fighter. He appears in numerous titles and has an iconic moveset, and outfit. Considering his reputation, it makes sense that he's the main villain in both live-action movies. The late Raul Julia played M. Bison in the 1994 Street Fighter film. Critics were unimpressed with the movie, though many fans still cite Julia's Bison as a major highlight. David Dastmalchian plays the famous character in Street Fighter 2026. The film itself follows the source material far more closely than the 90s movie, and Dastmalchian offers his own take on the villain, far removed from Julia's. Raul Julia's M. Bison Stole The Show In Street Fighter 1994 Raul Julia's M. Bison is arguably the best part of the original live-action Street Fighter. His performance is strangely mesmerizing because he reads his lines with absolute conviction. Julia commands the scene every time he appears. He's larger-than-life and theatrical, yet grounded enough to feel threatening. Julia's Bison is also responsible for some of the greatest speeches in the movie. In one exchange, Chun-Li (Ming-Na Wen) accuses Bison of destroying her village and murdering her father. He replies, "For you, the day Bison graced your village was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday." Julia's Bison acts like he's the most powerful person in the room, and he doesn't need to prove it. His mannerisms and movements fit the character perfectly, even if his Bison isn't strictly accurate to the video games. Dasmalchian's 2026 M. Bison Is Great For Different Reasons Raul Julia's M. Bison left big shoes to fill for anyone taking the mantle in the future as his performance was such a spectacle. Fortunately, David Dastmalchian's Bison doesn't feel like an imitation of what came before, and he takes the character in a different direction. Street Fighter 2026 is unashamedly silly at times. It's an over-the-top action movie, with plenty of comedy. Dastmalchian is still theatrical and well-spoken, which suits the character. However, this new Bison is far nastier than his predecessor, and doesn't care who he has to hurt to achieve his goals. Dastmalchian's Bison is a power-hungry megalomaniac. He references Julia's Bison several times, but makes the character his own. One draw of Street Fighter 2026 is how faithful it is to the games, and Bison is a part of that. He acts like the sadistic dictator we love to hate, with behavior matching the movie's wild style. Which Actor Played M. Bison Best? The 1994 Street Fighter and the 2026 reboot tell entirely different stories, even if they share the same source material. It may seem like a cop-out, but it's arguably unfair to compare the two because they're trying to do completely different things with the character. Both look the part and are instantly recognizable as the famous dictator. We've already mentioned how special Raul Julia's M. Bison was and how important he is to the movie. His grandiose performance and delivery still hold up, and he clearly gives the role his all, resulting in a villain that even audiences unfamiliar with the games can enjoy. David Dastmalchian's Bison is suitably menacing, but also quite different from Julia's. His Bison is arguably a closer match to the games and even uses his signature Psycho Crusher special move. He also frequently rolls his eyes back, a subtle nod to the games, since Bison's eyes often appear white there. Audiences seeking an authentic portrayal of M. Bison will likely find more to enjoy in David Dastmalchian's performance. However, Raul Julia's M. Bison is captivating for different reasons, and both provide great portrayals of the legendary Street Fighter villain.
