Street Fighter Box Office Beats 3 Big 2026 Video Game Movies In One Weekend

He has been writing and podcasting about pop culture (especially horror movies) for over a decade at platforms including Blumhouse, Fangoria, Dread Central, The Backlot, and Arrow in the Head. Street Fighter has knocked out a trio of competitors. 2026's Street Fighter, which adapts the video game franchise of the same name, is the third live-action movie to do so following the 1994 movie of the same name and the 2009 box office bomb Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. The movie, which was directed by Kitao Sakurai (who co-wrote the screenplay with T. J. Fixman), stars Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken Masters, and Callina Liang as Chun-Li opposite a star-studded ensemble cast that includes Roman Reigns, 50 Cent, Cody Rhodes, Eric André, Kyle Mooney, David Dastmalchian, Don Lee, Olivier Richters, Orville Peck, and Jason Momoa. Per Variety, as of Sunday morning, Street Fighter is projected to close out its opening weekend with a 3-day total of $51.1 million worldwide, comprising $30 million from domestic theaters and an additional $21.1 million from international markets. In addition to pushing the movie past the $50 million global milestone in just three days, this total sees Street Fighter outgrossing three of the six major video game movies of the year in just one weekend. Those titles would be the Japanese horror movie Exit 8 ($43.9 million), Markiplier's indie smash Iron Lung ($50 million), and the standalone sequel Return to Silent Hill ($47.5 million). Below, see a breakdown of the box office performance of every major video game movie that has so far come to theaters this year and where it ranks on the chart of the highest-grossing movies of the year worldwide: Rank Title Worldwide Box Office #5 The Super Mario Galaxy Movie $1.013 billion #13 Resident Evil $361.1 million #34 Mortal Kombat II $129.6 million #58 Street Fighter $51.1 million #59 Iron Lung $50 million #61 Return to Silent Hill $47.5 million #64 Exit 8 $43.9 million While it is performing reasonably well among its peers, it remains to be seen if Street Fighter will be able to turn a profit. While Paramount Pictures is only on the hook for its distribution costs, the Legendary Pictures movie reportedly cost $82 million. Under normal circumstances, that price tag could place its estimated break-even point as high as $205 million. It seems highly unlikely that the movie will earn more than $200 million worldwide, considering the fact that it is currently on a trajectory to earn less than Mortal Kombat II. That movie, which underperformed against its reported $80 million budget, had a significantly larger global debut of $63 million, comprising $40 million in North America and $23 million internationally. If the new movie has a similar trajectory to Mortal Kombat II, it may only be able to gross about $105 million worldwide by the end of its run. However, it is entirely possible that it will have an even weaker trajectory, because it has failed to build the same level of word of mouth. Street Fighter reviews have earned it 41% from critics and 79% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as a B- CinemaScore. Mortal Kombat II, on the other hand, earned 63%, 86%, and B respectively. Choose the movie with the higher Rotten Tomatoes score. Should it indeed fail to outgross Mortal Kombat II, Street Fighter will remain in its current place on the chart of 2026's video game movies through the end of its run. It is entirely possible that it could eventually be surpassed, as well, because the animated sequel The Angry Birds Movie 3 (which follows two installments that earned $352.3 million and $147.8 million respectively) is set to debut on December 23, adding another competitor to the roster.
