Steven Spielberg’s Cult Classic Fantasy Adventure Is Officially Getting An Upgrade In November

Spielberg became a household name in 1975 with the release of Jaws, which became a phenomenon. The filmmaker spent the next two decades releasing a handful of films that are now widely regarded as classics, including Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), and Jurassic Park (1993). Though many of Spielberg's movies from this earlier era of his career were acclaimed, some made less of a mark, but at least one grew in popularity in the years following its release. After developing a cult following, Spielberg's Hook is now confirmed to be getting a 4K upgrade for its 35th anniversary from Sony Pictures. The 4K UHD version of the 1991 film will arrive on November 17th. The disc will include a 4K restoration with Dolby Vision made from the original camera negative. In terms of sound, Dolby Atmos will be available, along with 5.1 + 2-Channel Surround. The upcoming 4K release of Hook will also come with some notable special features. Included on the disc will be "Hook Never, Never Ending," an hour-long documentary in 4K resolution with the following description: Straight from the set of HOOK, this hour-long documentary features never before seen behind the scenes footage. Although not generally considered one of Spielberg's best movies, Hook now has a passionate following due to the director's unique take on the story of Peter Pan. The late Robin Williams takes on the role of an adult Peter, with the story following the iconic character as he returns to Neverland to rescue his children from Captain James Hook, who is played by Dustin Hoffman. Also starring Julia Roberts as Tinkerbell, Maggie Smith as Granny Wendy, Bob Hoskins as Smee, Caroline Goodall as Moira, Amber Scott as Maggie, Charlie Korsmo as Jack, and Laurel Cronin as Liza, Hook earned mixed reviews at the time of its release. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has only a 37%, with reviews praising the production design but taking issue with a script that lacked momentum and thematic and tonal cohesion. Despite a lackluster critical reception, Hook was a commercial success. Made on a budget of about $70 million, the film grossed just over $300 million at the box office. Still, this figure didn't match other major Spielberg films of the '90s, with Jurassic Park grossing $914 million and Saving Private Ryan (1998) grossing $481 million. Recently releasing Disclosure Day (2026) and revealing plans to make a Western next, Spielberg remains active as a filmmaker. Hook will never be one of the director's true "classics," but the 4K upgrade is sure to be a welcome one given the more positive reputation the movie now has in his filmmography.
