This time, it's an original idea from Megan Park's mind. In Sterling Point, adopted twins, 17-year-old overachiever Annie Jacobson (Ella Rubin) and her brother Connor (Keen Ruffalo), discover they have inherited a Canadian lake island from their estranged grandfather. When Annie heads up north to investigate the property, she uncovers a plethora of deep family secrets, including an unknown sister named Ramona (Amélie Hoeferle), the daughter of their adoptive mother. The Canadian backdrop serves as a fantastic locale for summer love, but romance becomes a secondary story to the engaging and complicated family story. After an incredibly addictive first season, Sterling Point has established an incredible world for Annie, Ramona, and their circle of friends. With the series not based on a book, Park has no roadmap or blueprint to follow, so where the story heads next is up to her. Now that the series has been officially renewed by Prime Video, Sterling Point has established some brilliant mysteries and burning questions that we need answers to. From family drama yet to be resolved to lingering romances, and of course, the status of the titular island. Sterling Point has a bright future ahead when these questions get answered! Will They Sell Sterling Point? Image via Prime Video The inciting incident that centers on Sterling Point is the revelation that Annie and Connor have inherited an island in Canada after their grandfather's death. Once Ramona was added into the picture, the decision regarding the island's fate changed faster than the flavor of the week. Why? Each new experience, revelation, and relationship has changed each individual's feelings about what the right decision is. Do they sell for a monetary turnaround? Do they keep it because of its emotional history? Can they build it into something that will foster new memories? With Annie, Connor, and Ramona each having a different opinion and the trio never on the same page, the answer is quite muddled. Annie was willing to cut ties and run at the start, but having built an emotional attachment, her feelings have changed. Ramona has been a part of the island literally her entire life. At the start, she was unwilling to budge, but with changing relationships and hard feelings now attached to Sterling Point, she knows that a major change could alter her life. And then there is Connor. We laughed at his silly and slightly flirtatious relationship with Denise Ballantine (Missi Pyle), but the two have been conjuring up a deal that would benefit both parties. His wheeling and dealing may ultimately force all their hands. The beauty of this decision is it's not one that will be made immediately, so expect a second season to alter the path to a decision thanks to many of the mysteries below. Will Annie and Ramona's Life Swap Last? Image via Prime Video It may not necessarily be a cliffhanger per se, but the final episode of the season showed Annie still on Sterling Point and Ramona waking up in the greatest city in the world, New York. Both have been eager to see how the other half lives, but how long will this experiment last? As Park told the Los Angeles Times, "There's a lot between these two young women having now experienced each other's lives fully that is going to be really interesting to explore and pick up, hopefully, if we get the chance to." Both Annie and Ramona are, for better or worse, impulsive and easily swayed by whims. We know that they'll ultimately have to reconvene in the middle, whether that's back in Canada or in New York, but it's clear that experience will shape their next chapters. More so for Ramona. Between newfound heartbreak, loss, and the revelation that her biological father is loaded, she has all the reasons to not want to leave. But big-city living can get overwhelming for a small-town girl. Since the title of the series is Sterling Point, expect Season 2 action to return to the place where it all began. But don't expect Annie or Ramona to be the same. They most certainly will have changed. How Will Ramona Bond With Her Biological Dad, Steven? Image via Prime Video A major part of Sterling Point is about children and deciding what a parent means to them. Further, once they decide who their parental guardian is, what role does that person play in their lives? It's a truly fascinating study because Ramona certainly experienced emotional whiplash after her father figure changed multiple times! Now that Steven Jacobson (Jay Duplass) is officially Ramona's biological father, their relationship has significantly become something new. Steven isn't necessarily "Father of the Year," as keeping tabs on his adopted teenage kids was quite comical. He soared into father mode in order to preserve his pain and heartbreak, but knowing how desperately he and his wife wanted a child of their own, now Ramona being that kid will likely change him. For Ramona, she'll never give up on the connection she had with her grandfather, nor the fatherly role Joe (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) played, but now finding a missing part of her is destined to make her want to establish something she never knew she wanted. Duplass told TV Guide, "It sounds like Ramona is in need of some parenting, or at least some parental love. We found out late in the game that Ramona is Steven's, and he's going to get a second chance at parenting. He could not do it in the wake of deep personal tragedy. That's exciting to see and think about. I think we also know that no matter the circumstances, parenting is a motherf-—er. It's not going to be easy no matter what." Perhaps the biggest question when we do see how they connect is if anything changes between Steven and the twins. Who Are Annie and Connor's Birth Parents? Image via Prime Video Speaking of the twins, it's safe to say that leaving Connor to his own devices tends to lead to some unexpected drama. He is a kid who goes off of pure emotional whims. He is brilliant, but he is a lone wolf when it comes to making major life-altering plans. We learned late in the game that Connor reached out to the adoption agency about talking to his and Annie's birth mother, and she was willing to meet. Of course, Annie has no idea that this has happened. With parentage being a major theme in this story, expect Connor to meet with her, for better or for worse. Whether that includes their birth father is another question. The big question will be who they are and why they gave up Connor and Annie for adoption. And, does Steven know who they are? Sterling Point is unafraid to make things messy, and this new revelation is destined to greatly change the dynamics. With Ramona being the biological child, it may make both Connor and Annie feel a certain kind of way. Having a biological connection of their own may be what they've been longing for, especially since their adoptive father has been keeping tons of secrets from them. There have been a plethora of series that explored adoption and how that affects the child. Furthering that conversation into Season 2 is quite exciting. It might be rewarding, and it could be traumatic for Connor and Annie. That said, Annie never signed off on this, so she might be in for a surprise she wasn't expecting. Is she even willing to meet her birth mother? No matter what happens, it's going to open some sensational narrative doors. Now, is it too soon to fan-cast the 'rents? Let's begin with Annie. All season long, Annie has experienced what it's like to be involved in a love triangle. Like some other teen dramas, her romance involves a perfect local boy who gives her a chance to see the world differently and a flash from the past who makes her feel at home. Both Ellis (Jacob Whiteduck-Lavoie) and Rory (Daniel Quinn-Toye) are excellent options, but by the end of the season, with her decision to stay on the island, Annie chose to try something new with Ellis. They both come from very different worlds and lives, but they have a lot in common when it comes to trust in their parents and the secrets they've been keeping. Plus, on paper, Ellis is a walking green flag! Why would you not pick him? So, does that mean Rory's out of the picture? Absolutely not! Rory is embedded into Sterling Point in a very different way. His family's money is tied to the island's prosperity. Not that Rory seems like a vindictive kid, but he can be emotionally manipulative. Remember how he suddenly could play piano? He's a kid who doesn't like losing or having something taken away from him. Park gave some insight to Swooon into how Rory remains in the picture. "He's got skin in the game. There's always going to be a chance for a Rory pop-up, and we always joked Denise probably had like 17 kids with all of her different husbands. So maybe there's another Denise kid out there, another hot brother," she said. Do Ramona and Oona Have a Chance for Reconciliation? Image via Prime Video Perhaps one of the greatest assets of Sterling Point is the brilliant depiction of LGTBQ+ individuals and their stories. As Park told Out, "It felt authentic to these actors and the story, and it just kind of feels like a no-brainer to me." The inclusion is phenomenal and diverse. Though it started off with a punchline with Annie's gay boyfriend, it only grew authentically from there. We have the delightful Camp Rock party planner in the non-binary Sully (Nikko Angelo Hinayo). Then, of course, the secondary romance storyline comes from Ramona as she navigates her hidden romantic feelings for her flirtatious longtime friend Oona (Bo Bragason). Though there was a near trip up with a new girl at a party, Ramona and Oona found their hearts entangled. Unfortunately, it was short-lived. "Ramoona" is pure, and we want them to be together in the end, but at the end of Season 1, they left things on a messy note. Oona and Ramona's breakup was multilayered. Oona pushed Ramona away because of her severe abandonment issues, but in her heart, she thought letting Ramona go to New York was what was best for her. She did not want to be responsible for holding her back. But with both young women having their home base being Sterling Point, they will have to find their way back to one another. But whether Ramona can put the hurt behind her is the bigger question. It's safe to say that being in one another's orbits, they're not done with one another. Sterling Point is one of the few teen dramas of late that not only features prominent representation in their characters, but it also normalizes queerness. Expect that to continue and flourish in Season 2. Will Oona and Maple's Mom Return? Image via Prime Video What was important for Park with Oona was to ensure that she was a fully realized character with her own story. And that came in Oona serving as the caretaker for her younger sibling, Maple (Mabel Strachan). "She has such a special relationship with her sister, and such a confidence and joie de vivre, maybe because of her circumstances of not having a mother around," Park told Out in that same interview. She also confirmed that their mother is very much alive, but only pops in while she lives her own best life. Maple takes abandonment quite differently from Oona because Maple has a mother figure in Oona. That's not necessarily the case for Oona. With all the parentage drama over the summer, it's clear that she's longing for her own mom. "I wish we had more time to really get into Maple and Oona's backstory and their mom and their dynamic. If we'd had more time, that would have been something I would have loved to give more landscape to," she says. So, if a second season is ordered, expect this dynamic to be explored. As seen with the other kids on the island, when a parent pops into the picture, everything changes. Oona guards her mommy issues, but that wall may fall should she arrive for a visit. Again, is it too soon to fan-cast their mother? Will Joe and Kate Make Up? Image via Prime Video Though the show is centered on the teens, one of the greatest gifts that Sterling Point gave was the adult actors. Jeffrey Dean Morgan remains an immense talent, so seeing him in a vastly different light as a father harboring a dark secret was a phenomenal watch. Joe may have been quite upset that Annie popped up, as it threw his entire life into disarray. Having an already strained relationship with Ellis, the moment that it came out that Ramona might become a ticking time bomb that he couldn't stop. Though he wasn't the father after all, it did reveal his affair with Steven's wife. Now that it's all out in the open, Joe's relationship with his wife Kate (Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers) is on the rocks. And to make matters worse, it blew up for no reason. Nevertheless, Joe must now pick up the pieces before he loses them for good. TV Guide spoke with both actors to hear their perspectives on the situation. "I feel like Joe is going to have a lot of uses digging his way out with his wife. I don't see this panning out real well for him," Morgan revealed. "I think it makes matters worse that Ramona isn't his child. In fact, it just shows how unaware he is, and Kate is over Joe's bulls–t.' Meanwhile, Tailfeathers' take was, "The truth always comes to the surface at some point. I was heartbroken for Kate. I was heartbroken for that revelation. It's going to be really hard for them to find each other again if they do manage to work it out." We like to believe that love always finds its way back, but that doesn't always make the journey easy. There may be one reason why they will make things work, and he goes by the name Ellis.
