Steps to form delimitation commission after Onam: Keralam Minister

A delimitation commission will soon be formed to study the matter of district reorganisation in Keralam, Revenue Minister A.P. Anilkumar has said. Mr. Anilkumar told mediapersons that steps to constitute the commission will begin right after Onam. Which districts would be formed would be decided on the basis of the commission report, Mr. Anilkumar said.Making a new district with Muvattupuzha as its headquarters is a decades-old demand. It was after Muvattupuzha MLA Mathew Kuzhalnadan raised this demand that Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan gave a favourable response. He pointed out that since the Census exercise would extend to 2027, there were restrictions on changing the boundaries of village, taluks, and districts as per the Union government’s instructions. However, there was no hurdle to appointing a delimitation commission.Malappuram should get the maximum consideration owing to its size and population, the Minister said. With 16 Assembly segments, Malappuram was deserving of district reorganisation, Mr. Anilkumar who represents Wandoor constituency in the Assembly said. He added that he agreed with the demand as a Revenue Minister and on account of hailing from Malappuram. He clarified that there was no reason at present to allege that Malappuram was being discriminated against. Justice would be ensured when the delimitation is done, he said. Published - August 24, 2026 10:14 pm IST
