Stephen King's Hit New Sci-Fi Thriller Series Officially Releasing Season 2 This Fall With First-Look Images Revealing Gritty Return

After the series was previously teased to arrive this year, ScreenRant's Fall 2026 TV Preview from Kara Hedash has now officially confirmed that The Institute season 2 will premiere in fall 2026. However, MGM+ has yet to reveal the exact release date for the next installment in the Stephen King sci-fi adaptation. In addition to confirming the release window, ScreenRant's Fall Preview unveiled first-look images of a few of The Institute's returning cast members and new season 2 actors, including a glimpse at Game of Thrones star Alfie Allen's mysterious character. The stills also feature Joe Freeman back as Luke Ellis looking nervous behind a door, Ben Barnes as Tim Jamieson speaking to Luke, and Mary-Louise Parker as Ms. Sigsby in what looks to be a study: Developed and written by Benjamin Cavell and produced and directed by From's Jack Bender, The Institute adapts Stephen King's 2019 novel of the same name, which follows a group of teens and young kids with supernatural powers who are abducted and experimented on by a mysterious facility called The Institute. The series' first eight episodes covered the majority of the events in King's novel, but a few key changes to The Institute season 1's ending left the door open for more stories to tell with Luke, Tim, and other survivors of The Institute's destruction. Season 1 came to a close in July 2025, with MGM+ renewing The Institute for season 2 soon after in August. Production wrapped on the sci-fi horror series' second season in June 2026, and will finally head to the small screen later this year. With a confirmed fall 2026 release window, The Institute season 2 serves as one of two major Stephen King TV show releases this year, with Prime Video's Carrie series debuting all episodes on October 7. These two entries follow a packed slate of adaptations of the author's work in 2025, which included movies and TV shows like The Institute season 1, IT: Welcome to Derry season 1, The Monkey, The Long Walk, and The Running Man. After The Institute season 2's eight episodes come to a close, the next Stephen King movie and TV show adaptations in the works include the recently-renewed IT: Welcome to Derry season 2 at HBO, Mike Flanagan's film adaptation of The Mist, a movie version of Mister Yummy, a new film adaptation of The Stand from Doug Liman, and a movie remake of Cujo at Netflix. Stephen King himself serves as an executive producer on The Institute, which has yet to be renewed for season 3 by MGM+ ahead of the sophomore outing's debut. The Institute season 1 received mostly positive reviews from critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and has intermittently returned to the top 10 rankings on MGM+'s streaming charts in the year since its finale.
