Steam On Linux Dips Below 4% For August

Valve just published the Steam Survey results for August 2026. After jumping above 4% in July, in August it fell back below that threshold. Meanwhile CachyOS continues gaining ground among Linux gamers. In March of this year was a record high of 5.33% for Steam on Linux use but since then it's been bouncing in the 3~4% range. For August it's at 3.9%. It's just a minor 0.11% drop compared to July. In absolute numbers it's possible that it's around the same or even higher in terms of the total Linux gaming customer base, but without any fresh absolute numbers on Steam usage, it's difficult to accurately assess. SteamOS leads among the Linux distributions with a 21% marketshare with this being the Arch Linux based OS of the Steam Deck and Steam Machine. CachyOS is in second at a very healthy 15.4%, a 1.16% month-over-month. AMD CPU use among Linux gamers remains in the upper 60 percent range with custom AMD SoCs powering the Valve Steam Deck and Steam Machine plus their overall open-source friendliness to the Linux gaming/enthusiast community.
