Starlink officially launches satellite internet service in Iraq

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Starlink officially launched its satellite internet service in Iraq on Wednesday, expanding high-speed broadband access across the country following the completion of licensing procedures with Iraq’s Communications and Media Commission (CMC). The announcement was confirmed by CMC Chairman Balegh Abu Kalal, who declared the service officially operational. “With God’s blessing, Starlink has officially launched in Iraq,” Abu Kalal said in a statement issued by the commission. At the same time, Starlink updated its official service map, listing Iraq among the countries where its high-speed satellite internet service is now available. Launch follows licensing agreement The commercial launch comes just weeks after Iraqi authorities finalized Starlink’s operating license. Earlier this month, Abu Kalal revealed that the licensing agreement and related security arrangements were signed inside Iraq before the government’s visit to Washington, describing the move as a step to safeguard Iraq’s digital sovereignty. According to the CMC, the agreement requires Starlink to comply with Iraqi laws and security regulations, including cooperation with relevant authorities on licensed devices and regulatory requirements. Government highlights security safeguards Officials have previously said the licensing framework gives Iraqi authorities oversight of the service through agreements reached with the company and national security institutions. The CMC also stated that Starlink agreed to comply with decisions issued by Iraq’s competent authorities, including regulations governing telecommunications services. In addition, officials have said the agreement is intended to address the widespread use of unlicensed Starlink terminals already operating in Iraq. Subscription prices and revenue sharing According to previous statements by Abu Kalal, monthly subscription fees are expected to range between IQD 75,000 and IQD 150,000, depending on the service package. The agreement also provides Iraq with a share of the company’s revenues, including an 8% direct contribution, an additional 1% universal service fee, and a 15% corporate tax applicable to telecommunications companies. Experts see boost for digital connectivity Technology experts have welcomed the launch, saying satellite internet could significantly improve connectivity in underserved and remote areas. Communications infrastructure expert Redha Khudair Elias previously said Starlink plans to establish seven ground stations around Baghdad, allowing Iraqi authorities to oversee the service under the agreed regulatory framework. Meanwhile, technology specialist Nawras Aref has urged government institutions to continue strengthening their cybersecurity capabilities to keep pace with rapidly evolving communications technologies. Long path to market Starlink’s entry into Iraq follows months of negotiations between Iraqi authorities and the company. The process began under the previous government, which hosted a SpaceX delegation in December 2025 to discuss licensing for satellite internet services. More recently, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi met Starlink executives during his visit to Washington, where Iraqi officials also signed the company’s final operating license. The launch represents one of Iraq’s most significant telecommunications developments in recent years, with officials aiming to expand internet access while maintaining regulatory oversight of satellite-based communications.
