Stargate: Timekeepers Officially Replaces The SG-1 Crew

With extensive experience playing video games, he covers all forms of gaming content at Screen Rant, from breaking news to the latest fan theories. Most-played games range from Clair Obscur to Civ to Elden Ring to Halo 2 and beyond. Stargate SG-1 remains one of science fiction's most beloved television series, with a winning combination of space exploration, military action, and creepy/mysterious alien mythology that helped establish a sprawling franchise that has endured for decades. Although Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe had their merits, the original SG-1 team remains the heart of the franchise for many longtime fans. Those fans have spent years eagerly awaiting a proper revival, making Amazon MGM Studios' decision to cancel its planned television continuation earlier in 2026 especially disappointing. Fortunately, Stargate finally received some encouraging news in October, with WandaVision creator Jac Schaeffer reportedly developing an entirely new series for Prime Video, potentially giving the franchise another chance at a long-awaited comeback. Meanwhile, another Stargate release is taking the franchise in a different direction, replacing the iconic SG-1 crew with an entirely new team and offering fans a fresh perspective on the beloved sci-fi universe. Stargate: Timekeepers Replaces The Original SG-1 Crew Jack O'Neill, Samantha Carter, Daniel Jackson, and Teal'c can all step aside, as Stargate: Timekeepers effectively replaces the iconic SG-1 crew with an entirely new team of specialists. The real-time tactics game introduces a separate group of characters operating within the established Stargate universe, allowing fans to experience an original story without abandoning the television series' continuity. The story begins near the end of Stargate SG-1 Season 7, during the Battle of Antarctica, when Commander Eva McCain and her team support SG-1 in its fight against Anubis. However, rather than continuing to follow the original crew, the narrative shifts to follow McCain's squad as they embark on their own dangerous missions. McCain effectively takes over O'Neill's leadership role, commanding a team that includes expert sniper Max Bolton, technical specialist Sam Watson, and drone operator Derreck Harper. The team also recruits A'ta, a Jaffa rebel, and Xugga, an Unas warrior, bringing additional abilities and a unique flavor to the group dynamic. Importantly, Timekeepers doesn't actually erase SG-1 or rewrite the events of the original series. Instead, it explores what other Stargate teams were doing while O'Neill and his companions were saving the galaxy, establishing an entirely different set of protagonists within the same beloved continuity. It's an interesting approach that expands the franchise without attempting to replace its established heroes outright. Timekeepers Is A Must-Play Before Stargate's Amazon Reboot While fans wait for Amazon to bring Stargate back to the small screen, Stargate: Timekeepers is arguably one of the best ways to revisit the beloved sci-fi universe. Developed and published by Slitherine, the PC real-time tactics game originally launched in January 2024 with seven story missions. Its second half arrived on October 2024, filling out a total of 14 campaign missions that players can now experience in their entirety. Although it never became a breakout hit, Timekeepers is something of an underrated gem for longtime Stargate SG-1 fans. The game currently has mixed reviews on Steam, with roughly 60% positive ratings, alongside a respectable 72 Metascore. Nevertheless, its original storyline, connections to the television series, and familiar Stargate mythology make it worth checking out, particularly for players who enjoy tactical strategy and stealth-focused games. Following the cancellation of Martin Gero's planned television revival and the recent news of a Jac Schaeffer revival, Timekeepers is a great way to dive back into the narrative. Despite virtually nothing being revealed yet about the new show's story, setting, or placement within the franchise's established timeline, there's sure to be a connection to the SG-1 events. Regardless of whether the upcoming series continues the original continuity or takes the franchise in an entirely different direction, Timekeepers offers fans an excellent opportunity to get reacquainted with the Stargate universe and its mythology while awaiting the next major chapter.
