Star Wars’ 'New Jedi Order' Era Is Finally Moving Forward After Years of Silence

The Sept. 3 issue of Production Weekly mentioned both Star Wars: New Jedi Order and Dave Filoni’s untitled movie as in-development projects. While inclusion in the magazine doesn’t guarantee both movies have been greenlit and are entering production, it suggests they haven't been shelved. What do we know about Star Wars: New Jedi Order? Star Wars: New Jedi Order will reportedly bring back Daisy Ridley as Rey roughly 15 years after the events of Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker as she rebuilds the Jedi. Considering that the Star Wars fandom has largely negative feelings about the sequel trilogy, especially after The Rise of Skywalker, New Jedi Order’s direct ties to that film will pose a steep challenge. The project has cycled through several writers. Damon Lindelof (Lost, The Leftovers, Watchmen) and Justin Britt-Gibson were the original screenwriters before Disney fired them — the pair are currently working together on HBO’s superhero detective series, Lanterns. Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight was also set to write, but left the project in 2024. Last January, Variety reported that George Nolfi (The Bourne Ultimatum) is now writing the script. Filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is set to direct the film. New Jedi Order was originally scheduled for release on Dec. 17, 2027, but was removed from Disney’s schedule in May 2025. What about Dave Filoni’s project? Details about Dave Filoni’s untitled film have been scarce, but Production Weekly includes the following description: “The story will focus on the New Republic and will conclude the interconnected narratives told in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and other Disney Plus series.” While it was previously rumored that the film would tie into recent Disney Plus TV series, it will be interesting to see whether it maintains that premise after The Mandalorian and Grogu underperformed at the box office. This past January, Filoni took over as president and chief creative officer at Lucasfilm. Filoni has overseen numerous Star Wars TV series, including The Clone Wars, Rebels, Ahsoka, Maul – Shadow Lord, and more. While most of his series have been well received, he’s been criticized for requiring viewers to be familiar with an increasingly complicated and insular TV universe. The only Star Wars film with a concrete release date is Star Wars: Starfighter, which takes place five years after the events of Rise of Skywalker and stars Ryan Gosling as a pilot. Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine) is directing the movie. It will be released in theaters on May 28, 2027. While there haven't been many Star Wars films in recent years, the series has stayed active through great TV series like The Ninth Jedi and the recent Star Wars: Zero Company tactics game.
