Star Wars Games Don't Have To Be Made By "Top Five Publishers", Lucasfilm Says

Lucasfilm Wants To Be "Flexible" With Star Wars Games After Zero Company And Galactic Racer Published Oct 18, 2026, 9:45 AM EDT George is the Lead News Editor for TheGamer, and has been working in the industry since 2021 after graduating from the University of South Wales with a bachelor's degree in Journalism. He has also previously written for RPG Site, WhatCulture, and PlayStation Lifestyle. George is an expert on platformers, action games, and fighters, but tends to play as many releases as possible. Some of the games George has extensively covered first-hand include Dead Rising, Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero, Assassin's Creed Shadows, and Ninja Gaiden 4. Sign in to your TheGamer account Lucasfilm Games VP Douglas Reilly says that the studio is trying to be more “flexible” when it comes to licensed Star Wars games, which makes sense after two big successes in a row. While I’d argue that Star Wars games have been good again ever since my beloved Cal Kestis debuted in Jedi: Fallen Order, it’s hard to argue that 2026 hasn’t been the best year for the series’ video game outings. Zero Company quickly emerged as a surprise Game of the Year frontrunner earlier this year, and Galactic Racer did exactly the same just a few weeks ago. As great as big-budget games like Battlefront and Jedi are, it’s clear that Star Wars is seeing just as much success with smaller, more focused titles. It looks like that’s a very purposeful approach from Lucasfilm Games, as its VP has confirmed that it wants to keep being “flexible” and working with partners of all sizes. Future Star Wars Games Will Be As “Flexible” As Galactic Racer And Zero Company Give Me A Dotemu Brawler And I’m Sold As pointed out by ResetEra user Lifejumper, The Game Business recently interviewed Lucasfilm Games VP Douglas Reilly about the runaway success of Star Wars Galactic Racer. When asked about the recent slew of Star Wars hits, Reilly said that Lucasfilm has “tried to be more flexible” when it comes to who it will take pitches from. The VP says that you don’t have to be “a top five publisher” to make a good Star Wars game and that, although there’s still an expectation of high quality, Lucasfilm wants to be less restrictive with the IP as a whole. It seems that’s already in motion, too, as Reilly noted that it’s “exploring all kinds of things” from large and small partners. I’ve been dying to see Star Wars turned into a retro beat ‘em up or Musou game for quite some time, so fingers crossed. Considering we already have multiple major Star Wars games on the very distant horizon like Jedi 3, Eclipse (if it ever releases), and both FOTOR and the KOTOR remake, it seems wise to plug those gaps with smaller titles in a range of different genres. Galactic Racer and Zero Company have proven that all that really matters is that the game itself is good, so let’s have more of that, please.
