Unlike many other iconic franchise IPs where it’s hotly debated which original or adapted video game is the best, there hasn’t been any debate as to which Star Wars game is the best since 2003, when BioWare released Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Some Star Wars games have been fantastic, such as the Soulslike-inspired Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and the recent turn-based tactics game Star Wars Zero Company, though nothing could hope to compare to or compete with Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and that’s why the choice-driven, space-faring RPG’s upcoming remake is so highly anticipated. Today, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic has a Metascore of 94 and is the highest-rated Star Wars game on Metacritic, confirming beyond a shadow of a doubt that it still hasn’t been dethroned or had its crown whisked away. That said, Star Wars’ latest game has come close and achieved a win that is equally impressive. Galactic Racer Is A Big Milestone For Star Wars Fuse Games With a Metascore of 88 at the time of this writing, Star Wars: Galactic Racer doesn’t beat Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic’s Metascore. Still, it’s clear how popular and beloved Star Wars: Galactic Racer already is due to it quickly becoming the highest-rated Star Wars game on Metacritic in the last 23 years. For a base of reference, the only games that sit above Star Wars: Galactic Racer other than Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic are: Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II, sitting at a Metascore of 91 Star Wars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron II, sitting at a Metascore of 90 Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, sitting at a Metascore of 89 This also means that Star Wars: Galactic Racer, less than a week after its launch, is the fourth-highest rated Star Wars game ever on Metacritic. Of course, because Metascores wax and wane, it’s possible that Star Wars: Galactic Racer’s will, too. A reason why Star Wars: Galactic Racer might be received as well as it has been is maybe because it scratches a niche itch for many Star Wars fans as a racing/roguelite game, and excels in terms of its superb sound design and immersive podracing simulation. Either way, it’s neat to see a new Star Wars game fracture that mold. Can Star Wars: KOTOR Ever Be Beaten? Besting Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic’s Metascore is a tall order. But if any game has the potential to do so, it might be its own remake, more than two decades later. The remake obviously has gargantuan shoes to fill, and BioWare’s signature flavor and charm is arguably unreproducible, but a modern remake that is capable of preserving the heart and soul of the original could breathe new life into it and lay a foundation for future Star Wars games. Otherwise, there are plenty of upcoming Star Wars games that could be phenomenal, including Star Wars Jedi 3, Star Wars Eclipse, and Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor sits below Star Wars: Galactic Racer at a Metascore of 86, for example, and, depending on how Respawn continues/concludes Cal Kestis’ journey, it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility to see its sequel hit a score of 90 or higher. Star Wars Eclipse will probably be a fairly novel Star Wars game, and it’s virtually impossible to predict whether it’ll soar or fall flat. The Star Wars game with the most weight on its shoulders, though, could be Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic (helmed by Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic director Casey Hudson). Only time will tell if any of these can beat Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, much less Star Wars: Galactic Racer.
