Before Dr. M'Benga is mortally wounded in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4, episode 6, he and Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush) argued. Joseph's plan to leave Starfleet was news to Christine, whose loyalty and service to the USS Enterprise was tied to him, or so she felt. "Off-Hour" also reveals that Chapel has only been on temporary duty assignment aboard the Enterprise since Strange New Worlds began. Nurse Chapel risks her own life to save Dr. M'Benga. Her solution to use strong force neutrinos to save M'Benga and the Enterprise was derived from Joseph's research in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1, episode 8, "The Elysian Kingdom." As the puppet T'Pring (Gia Sandhu) put it in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' puppet episode, the Enterprise is a "ship of chaos," and its brave crew endures constant "pandemonium." And T'Pring is not wrong. For Star Trek fans, Strange New Worlds season 4 alone has relentlessly bounced between genres. Within the reality of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, however, events like time traveling 65 million years into the past, nearly dying aboard a ghost ship, becoming intoxicated on shore leave, being forced to live in black and white, and the Enterprise almost exploding in a slipstream wormhole are ordeals they must cope with. Yes, it's all part of the job, and this is what every Starfleet officer signs up for. However, that doesn't take away from the trauma the Enterprise's crew must reconcile when impossible things happen to them so frequently. Since Star Trek: Strange New Worlds began, Captain Christopher Pike's crew (Anson Mount) was also forced to sing in a musical, were kidnapped by the Gorn, and had reality warped by Trelane (Rhys Darby). For Dr. M'Benga, serving on the Enterprise saw him give up his young daughter, Rukiya (Sage Arrindell), who became part of a cosmic being in a nebula. Joseph murdered a Klingon Ambassador (Robert Wisdom) and covered it up, survived Klingon zombies, and was nearly bisected in his own sickbay. After everything M'Benga has endured aboard the Enterprise, and in his sordid past as a Starfleet assassin, he is justified in feeling that he's had enough of exploring strange new worlds.
