Star Trek: Starfleet Academy reveals first look images, new guest stars, and its 2027 release date on Paramount+ for its second and final season. As part of Paramount+'s New York Comic Con Star Trek Universe panel, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy cast members Holly Hunter, Sandro Rosta, Bella Shepard, Karim Diané, Robert Picardo, and executive producers and co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau showed the audience footage from season 2. They also revealed that Starfleet Academy season 2 will premiere March 2027 on Paramount+ along with 11 new images below: At the NYCC panel moderated by Collider's Perri Nemiroff, Kurtzman and Landau also announced two new guest stars in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2: Bill Nighy and Rosemarie DeWitt. Nighy will play Captain Nahla Ake’s (Holly Hunter) estranged father, Nyk Ake, and DeWitt will play Laytha Sadal, the First Lady of Betazed and mother to Ocam (Romeo Carere) and Tarima Sadal (Zoe Steiner). Paramount+'s official logline for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2 is below: Season two of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy follows our cadets into their second year aboard the USS Athena. There, their ideals of leadership, friendship, romance and morality are put to the test as they navigate budding rivalries, shaky diplomatic negotiations, a fiercely competitive schoolwide tournament, and the arrival of a mysterious new cadet whose existence raises questions that could have consequences far beyond the classroom. As seen in the first look images, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2 will take the cadets further away from their San Francisco campus into more challenging training missions in outer space. Also announced at San Diego Comic-Con in July was the addition of a mysterious new cadet named Keats, played by Ruaridh Aldington. Nighy's character, Nyk Ake, is a Lanthanite, the long-lived species that also includes Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Commander Pelia (Carol Kane). Hunter also plays Nahla's twin sister in Starfleet Academy season 2. Speaking of family, the arrival of Laytha Sadal is bound to disrupt Tarima and Ocam's sophomore year. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy was canceled by Paramount+ less than two weeks after its season 1 finale premiered in March. This will leave the series unfinished at its halfway point, since Starfleet Academy was conceived as a four-year show to reflect the cadets' college experience. Further, Starfleet Academy season 2 is also the last to consist of 10 episodes in Alex Kurtzman's Paramount+ era. The future of Paramount+'s Star Trek franchise is unclear after Starfleet Academy and Strange New Worlds' final seasons premiere in 2027. There is no new Star Trek currently in production, and since Skydance plans to launch a new Star Trek movie first, it could be years until fans see a new Star Trek TV series. The good news is March 2027 isn't too long to wait for the premiere of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2, which will boldly take the cadets where they haven't gone before in their sophomore year.
