For 60 years, Star Trek has set the gold standard for science fiction television, making it one of the most endearing franchises in pop culture history. During its six decades, Star Trek has told a diverse range of stories that touch on various genres. While Star Trek is firmly rooted in the science fiction tradition, that has not stopped it from dabbling in the horror field as well. The Original Series alone had two memorable, horror-themed episodes: “Catspaw” and “Wolf in the Fold.” While the monsters in those stories turned out to be highly advanced aliens, they were horrific nonetheless. This year, the publisher released Threads of Destiny to coincide with Black History Month, a retelling of “City on the Edge of Forever.” Another one-shot showed an Earth under the thumb of the Romulans. Focused on Doctor M’Benga, the Enterprise’s Chief Medical Officer under Captain Pike, the book mixes the worlds of Star Trek and Edgar Allan Poe. This spooky one-shot features Dr. Joseph M'Benga of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds as he encounters various crew members turned characters and creatures from the worlds of Edgar Allan Poe aboard the U.S.S. Numerous Trek shows and even movies have riffed on Shakespeare, and Captain Picard was a huge fan of 20th Earth detective fiction. Mark Twain famously came aboard the Enterprise, right after the crew met a young Jack London. Finally, Data loved to cosplay as Sherlock Holmes. There are other examples from across the Star Trek universe as well. Yet rarely has horror literature been referenced on the show, and Evermore is changing that. The one-shot will draw from the works of American short-story writer and poet Edgar Allan Poe. One of the most revered writers in the American canon, Poe is considered one of the innovators of both horror and detective fiction. IDW’s solicitation for Evermore references “The Raven,” “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Masque of Red Death.” These stories ooze menace and dread, and still chill audiences over 150 years later.
