Sign in to your ScreenRant account Star Trek is about to turn 60 years old, and a new celebration of the milestone is coming up. The first episode of Star Trek aired on September 8, 1966 in the United States, changing the course of television history and establishing a sci-fi franchise that has remained extremely relevant throughout the decades. All these years later, Star Trek has expanded well beyond the boundaries of television, taking its passionate fans to new destinations in other forms of media. One anniversary celebration is taking advantage of that, using a video game space to set up a virtual event with a long list of guests. As shared on the official Play Star Trek Online website, Star Trek Online is hosting a new event called Star Trek Online and Beyond in honor of the franchise's 60th anniversary. This one-day event will take place on September 8, kicking off with a voice actor panel at 11AM PT. At 12:05 PM, a panel focusing on the artists who design for the universe will follow, and the event will conclude with a panel focusing on the next Star Trek Online update at 1:10 PM. While the event will be of the greatest interest to those who actually play Star Trek Online regularly, it could still be worth watching for a broader range of Star Trek fans. The virtual convention event will stream on Twitch and YouTube, and the "Designing for Trek" panel will feature designers from other Star Trek projects alongside two lead artists for the game. Assets for the studio have been created in part by the Roddenberry Archive, which has been working to digitally preserve Star Trek assets for the past five years. Star Trek Online and Beyond certainly isn't the only way to celebrate Star Trek's 60th anniversary, but it could be a fun one. Tuning into a virtual event is a lot easier than attending a convention in person, and it sounds like Star Trek Online is putting in the work to make this feel like more than your usual livestream. On September 8, other options include an "Under the Stars" screening of the first episode in Los Angeles, a theatrical Star Trek Day marathon of the first four films, and the season two premiere of Star Trek: Scouts. A full list of major events planned for the anniversary can be found on the official Star Trek website, and it's safe to say that Star Trek fans won't be bored in the coming week.
