Square Enix has completely reshaped the gaming industry over the studio's decades-long run, building a massive catalog of iconic franchises that have become synonymous with the RPG genre. From the legendary Final Fantasy series to beloved franchises like Kingdom Hearts, NieR, and Chrono Trigger, the Japanese publisher has delivered some of the most memorable gaming experiences of all time. Of course, Square Enix has never been afraid to experiment with new ideas, even as its biggest franchises continue to dominate the spotlight. Between ambitious remakes, unexpected spin-offs, and entirely new IPs, the company has consistently explored new ways to appeal to longtime fans and newcomers alike. And with several highly anticipated releases still on the horizon, there's plenty for fans to look forward to as 2026 draws to a close. In a new announcement, Square Enix has officially made its upcoming Pokémon replacement free ahead of the game's full launch this December, with an impressive new demo available for the upcoming Dragon Quest Monsters: Withered World, which launches on December 3. Square Enix's upcoming Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World could be one of the biggest Pokémon competitors to release in a while, and players can already get an early look at the game completely free. Ahead of its December release, Square Enix has made a playable demo available to download on Steam, offering a substantial preview of its monster-collecting RPG. Much like Nintendo's iconic Pokémon franchise, The Withered World is all about collecting, training, and battling creatures, with more than 500 new and returning monsters from across the beloved Dragon Quest universe. Players can recruit monsters to their party, develop their abilities, and use a "synthesis" system to combine two creatures into something entirely new. The game also features turn-based battles, party customization, and online competitions against other monster wranglers. However, The Withered World also has a completely original story of its own, following Bianca and Nera, two familiar characters from Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride. When their fathers fall ill, the pair travel to the mysterious Kingdom of Witherwood in search of a cure, embarking on an adventure that will eventually uncover the secrets of the dying world. The free demo trial covers the opening chapter, concluding with the events in Witherwood, and introduces players to the game's combat, exploration, monster recruitment, and synthesis mechanics, giving players a good sense of what's on offer in the larger release. Even better, players can transfer up to eight monsters from their demo party and reserves into the full game when it drops, provided they continue on the same platform. There are some restrictions, including a limit on recruiting rank G and F monsters, but completing the demo also unlocks a special Wrangler's Bundle for the full game. Square Enix's Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World officially launches December 3 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. The full version costs $59.99 on Steam, with a $94.99 Digital Deluxe Edition that includes additional content and 48 hours of early access.
