Square Enix Fans Split Over Our Next Final Fantasy Remake

Any given Final Fantasy game has spawned a cottage industry of merchandise and legacy games, especially the titans like Final Fantasy 7. In addition to spawning an entire expanded universe, FF7 has also kept Square Enix busy with the remake trilogy, spanning roughly a decade. Based on recent comments from the company, it seems we have an idea of where the studio is going next. Remakes for Final Fantasy 6, 8, and 9 were all floated, but would need "multiple entries" to remake them. Now, over on Reddit, fans are discussing Square Enix's next move. On Reddit, folks are discussing what the next Final Fantasy remake will be, and the consensus is obviously split. Some think there won't even be another remake, at least not at the same scope as Final Fantasy 7. Select fans think something is definitely coming: "Rumors are there's a 9 that they paused work on. It'd be nice if they did all the PS1 games; 6 would be cool but that would need a lot of refinement with its massive cast." Same with this user: "I have zero doubt that they will remake another. I want FFX, but I expect VIII." Some fans are looking at it realistically: "I don’t think they will ever attempt this again either….it’s monopolized its development of other titles for sure. I believe they did this because of the cultural movement behind the story of FF7, it was a turning point for gaming as a whole and introduced some of the most iconic hero’s and villains in all of media, there will NEVER be another FF7 and turning it into the large spectacle it is now is what the game always deserved, we all knew this playing it as kids (If you were a 90s baby) FF7 was special and I’ve enjoyed every moment of this reimagining of one of the most iconic RPG games of All time!" Others are hopeful, but maintain a sense of realism all the same: "Yes to remakes. Both remake games have gotten mostly positive reviews and sold well, award nominations etc. Will they ever do it as expansive as the 7 remake games? I doubt it. It was a massive undertaking and the people they would want to be on those types of games (original developers) probably wouldn’t want to commit to it." Steam Final Fantasy 7 is in a unique position for a remake trilogy, given the extended universe the series has used since its launch. With Advent Children and several spinoff games to draw from, it was easy to add more content to Final Fantasy 7. Other projects may not be as adaptable, in that sense. Still, whatever happened to good old-fashioned single-part JRPG remakes?
