Spots Rs 14 lakh cash, returns with key maker to rob relative; Meerut man arrested

A planned theft involving a duplicate key has come to light in Meerut, where a man allegedly stole Rs 14 lakh from his brother-in-law's house after noticing the cash kept inside. Police have arrested two accused and recovered Rs 9.5 lakh.According to police, the incident took place in the Ganganagar police station area of Meerut. Amit Tomar, a resident of JG Block, lodged a complaint on August 10 alleging that Rs 14 lakh kept in his house had been stolen.In his complaint, Amit said he had arranged the cash for personal work and had kept it inside an almirah at his residence. He alleged that his brother-in-law, Sunil Som, a resident of Bhamori village, had visited the house and noticed the cash.Police said that around two hours later, after the family locked the house and left, Sunil allegedly returned with a key maker. Investigators alleged that a duplicate key was made to open the locked almirah, following which the cash was stolen. Amit further alleged that Sunil was accompanied by his associate during the theft.POLICE LAUNCHED INVESTIGATION, CCTV EXAMINEDFollowing the complaint, police launched an investigation and examined CCTV footage from the area. Officials said the footage allegedly showed Sunil Som along with another man near the house around the time of the incident. Based on the evidence collected during the investigation, police arrested Sunil Som (48) and his associate Amit Som (40), both residents of Bhamori village under the Sardhana police station limits.Police said they recovered Rs 8.5 lakh in cash from Sunil Som and Rs 1 lakh from Amit Som, taking the total recovery to Rs 9.5 lakh.Following the recovery, police added relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) to the case. The accused were produced before a local court after the completion of legal formalities.Police said efforts are underway to recover the remaining amount and ascertain whether any other individuals were involved in the alleged theft.
