Commander James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley). Star Trek II is set in 2285, over twenty years after the events of Strange New Worlds season 4, but the prequel is dutifully about planting the seeds for the future. Directed by Axelle Carolyn and written by Robbie Thompson, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4, episode 2, "The Griffin Incident," sends Kirk, Lieutenant Spock (Ethan Peck), and Lieutenant La'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) to the USS Griffin, a ghost ship infected by a malignant spirit. The Griffin's entity preyed on the three Starfleet Officers' inner dread. For Spock, the Griffin exploited his current belief that his humanity is a greater virtue than his being Vulcan. Kirk's inadequacies as a father to his young son, David, are brought to the surface, while the Griffin used La'an's fears of her augment DNA turning her into a monster to hold Noonien-Singh in its murderous thrall. Amidst all of that spooky horror, "The Griffin Incident" also foreshadowed the cause of Spock's death in Star Trek II. Kirk’s Dialogue Set Up Spock’s Death In Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan Unbeknownst to Kirk, his simple update to La'an about Carol Marcus and their son David establishes how Spock will die in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Walking the forbidding halls of the USS Griffin, Carol asks James about David and his mother, whom she first heard about in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2's musical episode. Kirk replies: "Carol's great. Incredible mom. Just got approved for her dream project." Kirk's throwaway line reveals that the United Federation of Planets gave Dr. Carol Marcus the green light for Project Genesis. Carol's dream was to create technology capable of terraforming dead planets into living worlds capable of sustaining life. Marcus intended Genesis to address the problems of hunger and overpopulation in the galaxy. In Star Trek II, Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalban) steals the Genesis Device as part of his revenge against Admiral Kirk (William Shatner). Spock sacrifices his life to save the Starship Enterprise from Khan detonating the Genesis Device in a suicide attempt meant to kill Kirk. Ironically, Kirk tells La'an about Carol Marcus and her "dream project" in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4, episode 2. La'an is Khan's ancestor and carries his augment DNA. What were previously recessive traits are now coming to the forefront, beyond La'an's control, causing her to fear becoming a villain like Khan. When she falls under the USS Griffin entity's control, La'an stabs Kirk in the midsection while promising James that "Your little boy is going to die just like you. At the end of a blade. Bleeding out in a dark corner of space." Another prediction that will come true as David Marcus (Merritt Butrick) is fated to die from being stabbed by a Klingon on the doomed Genesis Planet in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. Spock Doesn’t Know His Future Is Linked To Carol & David Marcus Spock was separated from La'an and Kirk for most of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4, episode 2, and wasn't privy to their conversation about Carol and David Marcus. Yet the Vulcan Science Officer's fate is tied to the Marcuses as the inventors of the Genesis Device, the cause of Spock's death in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Notably, when Dr. Carol Marcus (Bibi Besch) resurfaces in Star Trek II, Spock recognizes her immediately, to Admiral Kirk's chagrin. This is based on Kirk and Spock's shared history being developed in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Although Spock hasn't met Carol or David yet, perhaps he learned of the Marcuses from the Vulcan mind-meld he shared with James in Strange New Worlds season 3. In Star Trek II, Spock's Vulcan physiology gave him the only fighting chance to survive the radiation involved in repairing the Starship Enterprise's damaged warp core. Spock succeeded, allowing the Enterprise to warp away to safety as Khan detonated the Genesis Device, but he succumbed to radiation poisoning. Spock is resurrected in Star Trek III, on the same Genesis Planet where David Marcus dies. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4, episode 2 lays the foundation for Star Trek II and III without Carol and David Marcus even appearing in "The Griffin Incident." David will reportedly appear later in season 4, and perhaps Carol will as well, which could further connect the dots to Spock's death over 20 years later.
