Spider-Man & Punisher Remaking Iconic Civil War Panel Teased By Tom Holland

Brand New Day will also bring Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle to the big screen for the first time, setting the stage for a new dynamic between the two street-level heroes. The chemistry between them is bound to make an impression, as Holland and Bernthal share a genuine off-screen bromance. Holland even pushed Bernthal to audition for the MCU role, after he had helped Holland read his lines for Spider-Man. In an interview with ScreenRant's Tatiana Hullender at Spider-Man: Brand New Day's red carpet premiere, Holland was asked whether he and Bernthal would recreate the iconic Civil War panel of Punisher carrying an injured Spider-Man in his arms—or whether they had already filmed their own version. Suprisingly, as the king of spoilers, Holland kept his answer secretive: Tom Holland: You’ll have to wait and see. It's also worth noting that fans have predicted that Brand New Day could recreate the image since Bernthal’s casting was announced. Holland’s refusal to rule it out will only add fuel to the theory, although his answer stops well short of confirming that the scene appears. This scene would not be the movie's only chance to draw from the pair's comic history. Punisher debuted as a Spider-Man antagonist in 1974’s The Amazing Spider-Man #129, having been deceived into hunting the hero before realizing he had targeted the wrong man. Brand New Day could similarly start with Frank and Peter at odds before forcing them into somewhat of an alliance. The iconic image comes from 2006’s Civil War #5, written by Mark Millar and illustrated by Steve McNiven. Peter initially supports Iron Man and the Superhuman Registration Act, even publicly revealing that he is Spider-Man. The MCU has already told a radically different version of the Civil War storyline, meaning Brand New Day would not need to revisit the Superhuman Registration Act to recreate the visual. It would still be an immediately recognizable nod for comic readers. More importantly, the moment would perfectly capture the tension between Holland’s Spider-Man and Bernthal’s Punisher. Peter refuses to kill, while Frank rarely hesitates, giving the pair plenty to clash over before they can learn to respect each other. Holland may simply have been having fun with the question, but Brand New Day now has the perfect opportunity to bring the memorable Civil War image to life. Even if the movie does not recreate it exactly, Spider-Man and Punisher’s conflicting methods should make their first MCU meeting exciting to watch.
