Spacon fills Edition Denmark in Seoul with vintage Danish furniture and found objects

Copenhagen studio Spacon brought touches of its home country to Seoul with a showroom and cafe for the Edition Denmark brand that evokes the "layered feeling of a home". The 50-square-metre space was designed for a South Korean brand that sells Danish products. In a nod to the hospitality culture found in both countries, the central Seoul store also has an eatery next door. Edition Denmark has a cafe as well as a showroom space "For us, the project was about an exchange between two cultures and the things we already share," Spacon founding partner Malene Hvidt told Dezeen. "Both cultures have strong traditions around gathering, and we wanted the cafe and shop to connect these everyday rituals in a natural way." Visitors can buy the cafe's tableware The studio designed the one-storey spaces in Seochon, Seoul, to be closely connected, and visitors can buy some of the tableware and products from the cafe. In both the Edition Denmark cafe and the showroom space, Spacon used a lot of wood, which plays a big part in Danish design and interiors. "Wood became the foundation of the interior because we wanted the space to feel warm, familiar and lived in," Hvidt said. "Solid cherry wood is combined with terracotta tiles, woven cord stools and bespoke textile lamps, bringing in softness and references to Danish craft and architecture." The showroom space has mirrored ceilings To further underline the connection to Danish culture, Spacon added classic Danish furniture pieces, including the Folkestolen chair by designer Børge Mogensen. "We wanted the space to have the personal and layered feeling of a home, combining our custom furniture with new and vintage Danish pieces, art and smaller found objects," Hvidt said. "We also created wooden and aluminium trays engraved with Danish flowers, as small gestures at the intimate scale." Wood was used throughout the space In the cafe, Spacon wanted to create a calming feel and used moss-green stained wood and terracotta to add colour and warmth, while next door it went for a starker material palette. "The shop has a slightly different character, with a mirrored ceiling opening up the small space and reflecting the objects on display," Hvidt said. The store sells Danish products in Seoul The store is the first project in a long-term collaboration between Spacon and Edition Denmark, which was founded by Dane Johan S Fuglsbjerg and creative director Ji Eun Lee. Other recent projects by Spacon include a pavilion for the Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen and an exhibition at the Danish Architecture Center. The photography is by Seongju Mun and Mihyun Son.
