Sovereign Tech Agency Providing Massive Investment Into Flatpak

The latest beneficiary of Germany's Sovereign Tech Agency is Flatpak where more than half a million Euros will be invested over the next two years to help with app sandboxing and other functionality. A €508,640 investment by the Sovereign Tech Agency's Sovereign Tech Fund will help Flatpak work to provide a more secure, sandboxed platform with new features to be developed by the end of 2027. The Sovereign Tech Agency previously invested into the GNOME project that helped with some Flatpak efforts while now this new initiative will help strengthen the sandboxing capabilities. In addition, new portals are to be developed around audio with PipeWire, network isolation with new features, a VPN portal modeled after Android and iOS APIs, and a new portal for spell checking and other writing assistance. A password auto-fill possibility is also to be explored. As part of this effort is also work on "entitlements" as a new system for declaring static permissions for specific portals, "intents" to declare offered services, and maintenance on existing portals.
