Southwest Flight Attendants Union Head Leaves Amidst Conspiracy Theory [Roundup]

News and notes from around the interweb: The national parent of the Southwest flight attendants union appointed an overseer auditing how they were spending member dues. It looks like the union president is out: …President Kristina Peterson has taken a leave of absence. During her absence, First Vice President Sam Wilkins will assume the duties of the President in accordance with Article VI of the TWU Local 556 Bylaws, which provides that “in the absence of the President, the First Vice President will assume the duties of the President.” First Vice President Wilkins and the Executive Board will continue working together to ensure continuity in the day-to-day operations of our Union and the representation of our Members. The Executive Board remains fully engaged in the business of our Union. Our commitment to enforcing your Contract, protecting your rights, and advocating for our Membership remains unchanged. We extend our support and best wishes to President Peterson during her leave and ask that Members respect her privacy. She’s taking a medical leave, and here’s an account from a Southwest Airlines flight attendant that the whole thing is manufactured to keep the rest of current leadership in power though that’s not my read of the TWU constitution. This Southwest Airlines flight attendant is accusing her union’s leaders of arranging medical leave for their president to protect their own ‘$155,000 a year jobs’. She says the union president wanted to resign, but other officers persuaded her to stay in office and go out on medical leave instead, arguing that a resignation would trigger trusteeship, remove the leadership, and force officers to return to working flights. She describes their positions as a “friends and family program.” @julies.jumpseat ♬ original sound – Julie’s Jumpseat They have to go back with us peasants that clean airplanes, sit on reserve, and everything else in between.
