South Zone records 17 murder case convictions in September; IGP highlights impact of Case Officer Scheme

The South Zone police have delivered a push for justice and public safety, recording consistent conviction outcomes across murder and crimes against women and children throughout September 2026.Backed by meticulous investigations, close synergy with prosecution teams and robust supervisory monitoring under the newly initiated Case Officer Scheme, law enforcement agencies across southern districts have sent an unambiguous message — serious offenders and history-sheeters will be relentlessly pursued, meticulously investigated and brought to account, ensuring that no grave crime escapes justice.During September alone, 17 distinct murder cases successfully concluded in convictions across various districts, with Thoothukudi leading the region with five cases. These rulings held 50 accused persons accountable, resulting in life imprisonment sentences for 46 of them.Beyond murder cases, the pursuit extended to property crimes and heinous offences, securing convictions in two robbery cases and two grave theft or burglary cases involving six accused individuals.Further, heightened focus on crimes against women and children yielded convictions in 26 cases under the POCSO Act and rape statutes, implicating 34 accused, said Inspector General of Police (South Zone) Vijayendra Bidari.Notably, this subset resulted in one death sentence, two double life sentences or above, and 11 sentences carrying 20 years or more of imprisonment.Among all convicted criminals across murder and POCSO cases, 15 were identified as hardened history-sheeters.These milestones were the direct harvest of the Case Officer Scheme, under which Superintendents of Police personally identified key grave cases for close oversight, he stated. This administrative rigour ensured timely summons service for witness testimonies and seamless support for prosecutors, he added.Concurrently, the South Zone’s wider preventive policing framework through September 2026 has systematically applied legal pressure on potential offenders.Authorities initiated security bonds for 6,248 individuals likely to cause breaches of the peace under Section 126 of the BNSS and 11,185 habitual offenders under Section 129 of the BNSS.“Additional measures included bail cancellation proceedings against 955 history-sheeters, the execution of 19,488 non-bailable warrants, and the preventive detention of 755 dangerous offenders under the Goondas Act. Further, 1,010 NDPS Act cases successfully secured convictions through close trial tracking of drug offenders,” Mr. Bidari noted. This sustained pressure has yielded tangible macro-level benefits. Up to September 30, 2026, the region recorded 352 murder cases, showing a promising downward trajectory compared to full-year figures of 469 in 2021, 526 in 2022, 497 in 2023, 470 in 2024 and 471 in 2025.The individual judicial verdicts from September underscore the gravity and diversity of these prosecuted cases. In Madurai, the Principal District Sessions Court sentenced a primary accused to life imprisonment for the 2018 Usilampatti murder of his brother-in-law over a residential dispute, while the III Additional District Court for PCR Cases sentenced a woman to life for a 2024 Alanganallur murder involving a hot water assault.Virudhunagar witnessed multiple heavy verdicts, including a life sentence for a husband who fatally attacked his wife in Watrap, and a four-fold life sentence handed down by the Aruppukottai Additional District Judge for a 2019 land dispute murder in Keela Paralachi. In Dindigul, six individuals were sentenced to life for a 2019 homicide triggered by a fake Nagamani stone fraud.Similar resolute verdicts unfolded across Theni, Ramanathapuram, Sivagangai, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanniyakumari, where courts delivered strict sentences ranging from rigorous imprisonment to multiple life terms for brutal crimes stemming from personal feuds, land disputes and gang rivalries.Even juvenile criminality faced strict accountability, with the Madurai Juvenile Justice Board ordering a three-year detention for a 2016 murder-for-gain case involving a government laptop.Mr. Bidari urged the public to rely strictly on verified information and exercise caution against misleading or sensationalised social media claims.
