The accused, identified as Amod Pandit, was later arrested.Police said the woman, Chinta Devi, was attacked after an argument over money on Tuesday night. Family members alleged that Amod first assaulted her with his fists and feet and then repeatedly hit her with a spade.The deceased's daughter-in-law, Ganita Devi, said she learnt about the incident from a relative and rushed to the house. "My mother-in-law tried to reason with him after he came home drunk on Tuesday night and asked for more money. When she refused, he became violent and started beating her. Then he attacked her with a spade," she alleged.Ganita Devi also alleged that Amod's wife and young son saw the assault, and that the child pleaded with his father to stop. "The child was crying profusely. He kept saying, 'Don't hit grandmother,' but Amod pushed him aside," she alleged. She further claimed that the accused locked the main entrance from inside during the assault, stopping family members and neighbours from entering the house to rescue the elderly woman. A PCR call about the murder at UP Colony in Kharak Gaon village was received at Maidangarhi police station. A police team reached the spot and found Chinta Devi critically injured inside her house. She was taken to Safdarjung Hospital, where she was declared brought dead. A crime team and forensic experts later inspected the scene, collected evidence and a case was registered under sections for murder."During probe, police found that Amod had allegedly assaulted his mother following an argument over money," a senior police officer said. According to police, the woman had refused to give him cash to buy liquor, which triggered the fatal attack. The accused fled after the crime and was later arrested. Family members said Chinta Devi often survived by begging and that her son would frequently take away the money she collected to fund his drinking habit.
