Sound Open Firmware as the open-source, vendor-independent audio DSP firmware stack and driver framework is out today with a new feature update. Sound Open Firmware 2.15 introduces user-space, memory-protected module execution support.. Plus related enhancements around MMU protections and overall security so that misbehaving or buggy modules can no longer corrupt kernel memory or other moules' memory. SOF developers are working toward an end goal of being able to run untrusted vendor DSP modules. Sound Open Firmware 2.15 brings new hardware support including AMD ACP 7.x and NXP i.MX8MP Cortex-M7. AMD ACP 7.x will presumably be with upcoming AMD Zen 6 based desktop/laptop designs. The AMD ACP 7.x audio co-processor is described as offering "SoundWire DMA/DAI, TDM DAI type, 500µs low-latency timer tuned for ACP." This goes along with other recent Linux kernel driver activity for AMD ACP 7.x IP. With this new release there is also Intel USB Audio Offload Link "UAOL" support for enabling USB audio offload from the host CPU while the DSP handles USB audio directly. For improving testing of the SOF code, there is also now a QEMU Xtensa target ass well as a POSIX and libFuzzer fuzzing platform for security hardening use. Sound Open Firmware 2.15 also incorporates a number of security fixes and additional code hardening. Sound Open Firmware 2.15 also introduces new audio processing modules of Phase Vocoder, STFT Process, IPC4 Tone generator, FFT, and Selector modules.
