Sotomayor says SCOTUS has done ‘crazy things’ but she hopes some rulings will be reversed

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor said her colleagues have done some “crazy things” — and that she hopes the court’s decision granting former presidents broad criminal immunity will be overturned. The liberal justice made the comments Saturday while appearing for a civics education talk on Saturday at George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate, The Hill reported. “I dissent a lot. I’m hoping that the court will take back some of the crazy things that it’s done. I’m only joking — maybe not,” Sotomayor said. “No, seriously,” she said. “You know, I’ve spoken openly about this, there’s some opinions that I hope in my lifetime will get overturned. The immunity case is one of them.” In a 6-3 ruling, the Supreme Court in 2024 determined that core presidential powers are immune from criminal prosecution.Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor said she hopes the court overturns the decision granting former presidents broad criminal immunity (AFP/Getty)Sotomayor dissented from the opinion, along with fellow liberal justices Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson. At the time, Sotomayor wrote that the decision made President Donald Trump and his successors a “king above the law.” The liberal justice noted the “outpouring of voters” during the multi-day event to celebrate the country’s 250th anniversary, telling the audience Saturday, “I tell people all the time, there’s no excuse for not voting. There just isn’t. Apathy is not acceptable.” She also spoke about the importance of civics education, as she serves on the board of iCivics, the education group founded by the late Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. Sotomayor expressed concerns about the state of democracy, saying it would take “some hard work” to get the U.S. back on an “even keel.” “There have been some systemic changes in my court’s jurisprudence in many areas of law,” Sotomayor said. “We’ll settle down, too. Not quite sure when. But we will. And a new order will be established that people will begin to understand.”
