Sony Reportedly Ditches Live Service Horizon Game, Reboots It As Multiplayer Title

PlayStation Stops Sending Live Services Out To Die, As Horizon Hunters Gathering Is Reportedly Rebooted Published Aug 19, 2026, 9:09 AM EDT Sign in to your TheGamer account Horizon Hunters Gathering is no more - at least in the form that it was announced in. According to a new report from Bloomberg, Horizon Hunters Gathering is being rebooted following negative player feedback. This reboot will reportedly see developers strip away the live service elements and instead build the game as a traditional multiplayer title with a story mode. Horizon Is No Longer Part Of PlayStation's Live Service Strategy, According To A New Report PlayStation As per the Bloomberg report, the reboot is still being handled by Guerrilla Games, the developer of the mainline Horizon games. The new version of Horizon Hunters Gathering is said to be much smaller in scope, and feature a story mode which was seemingly not planned before. Despite the game getting this new lease on life, there is no guarantee that it has avoided cancellation. The studio has reportedly been told that it has until December of this year to "impress executives" with the next milestone. It's said that the reboot kicked off in June, giving the team roughly half a year to turn everything around. Horizon Hunters Gathering was announced earlier this year. There was then a playtest in March, but it seems that the results were not what PlayStation was after. At the time, we noted that there were very few players on Steam, and given the threat of cancellation, it doesn't seem that the situation was much better on PS5. This comes after PlayStation has faced several setbacks in its live service endeavours, as it originally had plans to release ten new live services by 2026, a figure it later increased to 12. While its goal was always widely regarded as overly ambitious - even unrealistic - the rollout has proven to be more disastrous than anticipated. Most notably, Concord was only playable for two weeks before it was taken offline, ending years' worth of planned content. Meanwhile, Marathon is fighting to keep its head above water, with a falling player count that even a free weekend couldn't salvage.
