Sony Officially Reveals New PlayStation Lego Set Featuring A Big Ol’ Disc Drive

Today during PlayStation’s latest State of Play, we got our first (official) look at a new Lego set that lets players recreate the original PlayStation console via plastic bricks. This, of course, includes a controller, the iconic gray panels of the original console, and a working top lid that can be opened and closed to reveal the console’s disc tray. That’s an awkward bit of iconic history to be reminded of now that we know Sony is ending disc production in 2028. During Thursday’s State of Play event, Lego and Sony revealed the PlayStation Lego set. A few photos and details of this upcoming set had leaked earlier in the day. Like the NES, Atari, and Game Boy Lego sets, this new PlayStation set is intended to be a near-scale replica of the original console, complete with some fun touches and details, including a clickable power button. The upcoming set will feature 1,911 pieces and will cost $180 USD. The Lego PlayStation set will be available to order directly from PlayStation starting on October 1. Lego Insiders will also be able to order the set on that day via the Lego website. And everyone else will be able to buy a PlayStation Lego set from Lego stores and the website starting on October 4. Here’s a video of the new set released by Sony: Online, people are already pointing out that the Lego PlayStation features a big ol’ disc drive in the middle of the console. Heck, the trailer above even takes a moment to show someone opening the lid. It’s not being hidden at all. Some fans are joking that Sony is releasing one more PlayStation console with a disc drive. Others are pointing out the drive and its plastic tray, which actually functions on the Lego set, and asking Sony to remember to include something like this on the PlayStation 6. The State of Play’s chat was also filled with people yelling at Sony about its move to all digital, which it announced earlier this year. Starting in 2028, the company will no longer produce new physical PlayStation games. Since the announcement, fans have bombarded Sony’s social accounts and support lines with angry comments, and others have pledged to never buy a PlayStation console again. Things have seemingly gotten so bad that Sony was forced to enact some new policies to protect its support staff from toxic abuse. Despite the uproar, it also seems extremely unlikely that Sony will delay its plans or backtrack on its digital-only future.
