Sons of Anarchy’s Official Sequel Brings The Club Back

Among the list of the best TV shows of all time are a variety of crime dramas, most notably Breaking Bad, The Wire, The Sopranos, and True Detective, all of them with different styles and tones. Joining them on that list is Kurt Sutter’s Sons of Anarchy, which ran for seven seasons from 2008 to 2014. Set in the fictional town of Charming, California, Sons of Anarchy centers on the title motorcycle club, led at the beginning of the show by President Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman) and VP Jax Teller (Charlie Hunnam). Throughout seven seasons, SAMCRO faces different enemies who threaten to bring the club down, along with a lot of trouble, betrayal, and heartbreak within the club. Sons of Anarchy gave a satisfying conclusion to Jax and the club, and this world expanded in 2016 with the spinoff series Mayans M.C. Now, talks about a prequel to Sons of Anarchy began in 2014, but the project, which would have followed the club’s founding members, never happened. As for a sequel, and as much as the show left some possibilities open with characters like Jax’s sons, as well as Opie’s, it doesn’t seem to be happening anytime soon – however, a new sequel-like project has been announced that will bring most of the club back together, but there’s an unexpected twist in all this. Legends is a meta-thriller developed and executive produced by Charlie Hunnam, with Jonathan Groff serving as showrunner. Legends will star Hunnam, Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates, and Theo Rossi as fictionalized versions of themselves. The show will see them reunite at a fan convention over a decade after Sons of Anarchy ended. However, the reunion takes a wild turn when the line between reality and art disappears, and they must confront a real-life threat a lot more dangerous than anything they faced in Sons of Anarchy. More casting announcements are expected to be made soon, so one can only hope that other SAMCRO cast members, like Ryan Hurst and David Labrava, will join for a more complete experience. It’s important to note that Sutter isn’t involved in Legends, but the Sons of Anarchy creator has already voiced his support for Hunnam and the project. In a video shared on his Instagram account, Sutter clarified that he won’t be involved in Legends and that it’s unrelated to the characters he created, instead being all about their legacy, and “there are thousands of people who are responsible for that legacy.” Sutter also added that Hunnam approached him to ask for his blessing, which he gave him, wishing him the best in this new project. Legends is unrelated to the continuity of Sons of Anarchy, but its cast and meta-style make it feel like an alternate version of Sutter’s show. The Sons of Anarchy characters of most of the confirmed cast for Legends died in Sutter’s show, as is the case for Perlman’s Clay, Sagal’s Gemma, Siff’s Tara, Boone Junior’s Bobby, Rossi’s Juice, and, of course, Hunnam’s Jax. Coates’ Tig and Flanagan’s Chibs are two of the few surviving SAMCRO members. This further adds to Legends’ “what if” vibe, offering a look at an alternate reality where all these personalities can reunite, but with an intriguing meta twist. Even more intriguing is how the line between reality and art will blur to make them all team up against a dangerous threat, as well as whether the show will see them riding bikes and wearing leather jackets again. There’s a lot more to learn about Legends, but it’s the closest there will be to a Sons of Anarchy sequel while also being its own thing.
