Actor Sonam Kapoor has reacted to the Maharashtra State Transport Department’s enforcement drive that makes knowledge of Marathi mandatory for commercial drivers, as the issue continues to draw attention in Mumbai. Since the August 15 deadline passed, transport officials have assessed more than 5,000 drivers across the region and issued notices to 722 auto and taxi drivers in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region who were unable to speak the language. The action has sparked public debate, with Mumbai autorickshaw drivers beginning a three-day strike on Monday against the Maharashtra government’s rule. Amid this, Sonam responded on Instagram to a post by journalist Faye D’Souza, commenting, “Huh (sic).”Drivers taking part in the protest said the requirement could increase their financial burden, particularly for those with limited formal education. They also raised concerns over the penalties for failing to comply with the language rule.During the protest, autorickshaw drivers blocked traffic on Kandivli Link Road. Some drivers said older members of the community were finding it difficult to learn Marathi within the deadline set by the authorities. Sonam married Anand Ahuja in 2018 and welcomed their first son, Vayu, in August 2022. She continues to divide her time between Mumbai, Delhi and London because of her personal and professional commitments. On March 29 this year, she and Anand welcomed their second son, Rudralokh. While revealing their son's name, Sonam and Anand's joint Instagram post read, "In the Vedas, Rudra, from the root rud, to roar, is the mightiest of the mighty. The one who eradicates suffering at its source, the divine force behind storms, breath, healing, and renewal. He is deeply connected to Vayu, the prana that moves through all beings. Our firstborn carries the name of Vishnu, the sustainer of life. With Rudra, a sacred continuity emerges. Breath and power. Preservation and transformation. One strengthening the other (sic)." "Like his name, may Rudra grow to be fearless, compassionate, deeply aware, and a force of strength and light. With gratitude for your love and blessings, Sonam, Anand, Vayu, and Rudra (sic)," the post concluded,The actor was last seen in Blind, which released in 2023.- EndsPublished By: Anurag BohraPublished On: Aug 26, 2026 01:58 IST
