Sona 2026: Marcos urged to restore trust in flood control probe

Flood control scandal composite image by INQUIRER MANILA, Philippines — Church leaders called on President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to deliver truth and accountability on the flood control corruption scandal ahead of his fifth State of the Nation Address (Sona) on Monday. In a statement, church leaders group ONE VOICE recalled Marcos’ revelation of the scandal during last year’s Sona, when he rebuked those who received “kickbacks” from the corruption. “Mahiya naman kayo! (Shame on you!),” Marcos said last year, drawing applause from his audience. Church leaders also pointed out that a year later, “The question remains: who allowed corruption to happen, and who benefited?” “Corruption is not an accident. It is systemic. It thrives on patronage, political dynasties, impunity, and the absence of genuine accountability,” ONE VOICE said. “While communities are drowning in floods, public funds are siphoned off and the poor are bearing the cost. We must continue to shine light on the heartbreaking truth: widespread and systemic corruption remains deeply rooted in government,” it added. This Sona 2026, let us demand not just another speech, but the light of truth, justice, and accountability,” ONE VOICE said.
