Published Oct 29, 2026, 2:52 AM EDT Simon is a Computer Science BSc graduate who has been writing about technology since 2014, and using Windows machines since 3.1. After working for an indie game studio and acting as the family's go-to technician for all computer issues, he found his passion for writing and decided to use his skill set to write about all things tech. Since beginning his writing career, he has written for many different publications such as WorldStart, Listverse, and MakeTechEasier. However, after finding his home at MakeUseOf in February 2019, he would eventually move on to its sister site, XDA, to bring the latest and greatest in Windows, Linux, and DIY electronics. Handwrite events directly; the native pen API ensures low latency; features an edit/undo chip, no forms or buttons. Grab Jotcal on Google Play, perfect as a fridge-facing family glanceable calendar. If you've seen my reporting for even a minute, you'll know I'm a huge fan of e-ink displays. So, any time someone finds another cool way to use e-ink devices around the house, I have to show it off. For instance, someone has turned their Boox Note Max into a calendar you can handwrite notes in, and you can too with a simple app. Jotcal makes your Boox Note Max a handy device for the whole family Stick it on the fridge Over on the e-ink subreddit, the relatably named user "window_seat_always" showed off their newest project. It's called 'Jotcal', and the idea is that you can throw it on an Android 12 e-ink device and it'll become a handy calendar you can see at a glance. The above photo is from the original poster's own Boox Note Max, but don't get any funny ideas about going through their personal information; they loaded it full of dummy data for the sake of that photo. The best part is, you don't need to sacrifice handwriting entries into a paper calendar: I wanted to write on the calendar the way you'd write on a paper one, so you can write "soccer Thu 4pm" on a day and the event is added straight away, with a small chip that lets you edit and undo, no buttons or modals or forms. I put a lot of work into handwriting on e-ink, and for Boox it uses the native pen API for low latency and accurate rendering. If you want to try it for yourself, head over to the Jotcal Google Play Store page and give it a spin.
