The joy of bunny-hopping through Jak and Daxter with a crowbar, knowing that a sleep-deprived hobbyist with the same niche crossover in taste as me had spent hours upon hours making this bizarre concoction work seamlessly was like watching the Sistine Chapel finish construction. The unending sewage pipe of vibecoded slop churned out with tokens doesn't have that same magic. So, when people put Leon inside of Elden Ring or Master Chief into Modern Warfare 2, it just isn't exciting anymore. It's apathy in a prompt. Thankfully, just because vibecoded slop is all the rage right now, that doesn't mean modders have given up. There's still some wildly impressive stuff being done, you just have to dig through a mountain of crap to find it. Right now, beneath that mountain of crap is a crossover that sends Link hurtling from the hills of Hyrule to the narrow catwalks of Anor Londo where Silver Knights make Chilfos look like bog-standard Bulbins. "Twilight Souls is a crazy ambitious total conversion mod for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess on GameCube that imports Dark Souls into the Twilight Princess game and engine and lets you play as Link in Lordran," modder Artholos explained. "This is NOT an AI passthrough or mashup mod, it's genuinely rebuilt Dark Souls inside of Twilight Princess." Twilight Souls Demo Is Available Right Now Artholos has a demo out right now that you can try, showing off the Undead Asylum escape through to the iconic landing in Firelink Shrine, though you can revisit the Asylum to fight the black knights and Stray Demon. "There's a selection of armor ready for you, including all of Link's outfits and the Elite Knight armor. Fashion Souls it up!" the description reads. "Stats are implemented and matter! Level up at the bonfire and see immediate results, including [an] attack rating for weapons with strength and dexterity! Dark Souls 3 and Elden Ring quality of life changes and fixes are also present, including the much nicer expanded inventory." As for the future of Twilight Souls, Artholos plans on playtests for early adopters to "find all the weird little ways Link can break out of the map" and a closed network test to experiment with multiplayer features like invasion and co-operation, much as FromSoftware does pre-launch, while building the "rest of the game, bit by bit, and showing off progress and cool content on social media." There's always the risk that Nintendo snipers will lock their crosshairs on the project, but Artholos stresses that Twilight Souls "contains NO game files or assets from either Twilight Princess or Dark Souls," and requires you to "source your own copies of both games" much like with Gordon and Daxter, the bizarre Jak and Half-Life mod.
