Some people already have their Christmas decorations up — others say they ‘kill the vibe’

When do you start decorating? (Picture: Getty Images) There are two types of people in this world. Those who wait patiently for December to roll around before decorating for Christmas, and those who treat November 1 like the official green light to turn their living room into Santa’s grotto. It’s a debate that comes around each year, and one that divides opinion every time. For many, the warm glow of fairy lights provide a much-needed mood boost in the dreary winter. On the flip side, some argue that holding off on going full festive mode is essential for preserving the season’s magic — not to mention preserving a real tree up until the big day. Opinions are divided on when’s acceptable (Picture: Getty Images) Naturally, the internet has thoughts, with a recent thread on Reddit’s r/femalelivingspace forum attracting over 800 comments in four days. I like the lights and the feeling of having everything decorated.’ Another user, @merywen, accused November decorators as ‘rushing through the year, disrupting the connection each celebration has,’ a sentiment echoes by @superteach17, who claimed: ‘Putting things up early makes the holiday tired.’ It seems Metro readers are similarly divided on what’s acceptable. Renata Coughlan and James Pearsonm claimed they’ve got their homes ready for the festive season already, with Christine Andrew Rumbold Walker noting it ‘brightens your mood up’ to see the lights. Others were even more fanatical, including Christmas loyalist Dan Gleeballs taking a Wizzard-style approach and recommending people ‘don’t take them down, ever.’ But not everyone felt the same. Christine Tarr said: ‘When I was a student, we left the tree up all year as the house was drab. When my children arrived, it was always Xmas Eve ’til New Year’s Day. Now, as a pensioner (hate that word), it’s never again.’ Another, Luke Evans, said he refuses to put his decorations up until December 24, while Paul Jeffries doesn’t championed an even more Scrooge-like school of thought, passionately writing: ‘NEVER!!!!’ ‘Traditionally it’s the 12th night, 12 days before, 12 days after,’ added Paul Jeffries — and this does appear to be a popular choice. According to a report by Send Me A Christmas Tree, 14% of Brits choose the second week of December to put theirs up, 11.4% opt for the week prior and only 5% purchase after December 20. However, in a recent YouGov poll, the second half of November was found to be the median answer for when it’s okay to deck the halls. Four in ten respondents in the 2155-person survey said they felt the holiday spirit should be saved until December, while 7% put the sweet spot as mid-month. But among the real die hards (you can decide if that was a Christmas film reference or not), 4% were down to herald in the season before early November, with a grinchy 15% claiming they frown upon those who do so before the third week of December.
