Soap and TV star Cheryl Hall dies aged 76

Actress Cheryl Hall has died (Picture: ITV/Shutterstock) Actress Cheryl Hall, known for roles in EastEnders, The Bill, and Citizen Smith, has died aged 76. Her former partner, actor and singer Robin Askwith, confirmed the news on social media. Taking to X, Askwith, who dated Hall for three years in the 1970s, wrote: ‘What a force of nature she was. A really innovative working class, charismatic actress coming out of the late 60s. Brave in every way. ‘And now I have the sad news she has passed away. I am devastated… ‘She was my beginning. Alongside his post, he attached a photo of himself with Hall from his stint in the 70s comedy series Confessions. Hall played Shirley Johnson, the girlfriend of Wolfie Smith, in the sitcom, which ran for four seasons from 1977 to 1980. She made her acting debut aged just 20, playing Red Hat Girl in the 1970 psychological comedy drama film Deep End, which co-starred Jane Asher and Diana Dors. From there, her other early acting credits included the On the Buses episode The Epidemic (1971), in which she portrayed Eileen in one of her first TV roles. She went on to feature in Doctor Who as Shirna, played Christine in eight episodes of EastEnders in the late 80s, and was Sadie in 12 episodes of The Bill. Following her first stint in the police drama from 1984 to 1988, Hall returned to The Bill in 2007, this time as the character Pauline Smith. Her CV also credited her with roles in more of television’s most popular shows, such as Poirot, Inspector Morse, Grange Hill, Casualty, and Silent Witness. Beyond acting, Hall had a passion for politics and served as the Labour Leader of Kent County Council for a period. Paying tribute after Askwith announced the news, @judyjarvis called her a ‘very clever actress’, while @bestofbritishuk praised her as ‘brilliant in everything she did’. ‘Cheryl was, in my opinion, a highly underrated actress. She was brilliant in the sitcom, Lucky Feller, alongside David Jason and Peter Armitage. A sad day’, added @Maltmeister2. @efrogwraig affectionately described her as ‘fierce and fabulous’, and @alps2018 stated that Hall ‘lit up the screen with energy’.
