‘SNL UK’ & Cynthia Erivo Give Elphaba-Glinda Shippers A ‘Nigerian Wicked’ Sapphic Parody

Although the Wicked movies may not have given LGBTQ fans the sapphic moment they wanted for Elphaba and Glinda, Saturday Night Live UK heard their demands. On this weekend’s episode of the sketch comedy show, host Cynthia Erivo returned to the magical franchise for the parody Nigerian Wicked, in which she mixed it up by playing Glinda, opposite Ayoade Bamgboye as Glinda. The low-def take on the movie features the Shiz roommates in some familiar scenes, including Glinda giving Elphaba a makeover, as well as some not so familiar scenes, like Glinda slapping Elphaba because she’s “classless” and judging her for eating a hardboiled egg. Before making their way to “LagOz” to meet the Wizard (Hammed Animashaun), the pair shares a steamy moment, pulling away before they kiss. Watch on Deadline As they arrive in the “Emerald, White and Emerald City,” Glinda asks for a Birkin, and Elphaba requests a “skinny BBL that defies gravity.” But it turns out, the Wizard is broke. Before another attempted kiss, the sketch ends with Bamgboye attempting to hit Erivo’s iconic high note from “Defying Gravity”. In addition to Erivo as guest host, this week’s episode of Saturday Night Live UK featured musical guest Blossoms.
