The police and Excise Department squads have launched a joint investigation into the seizure of 60 bottles of foreign liquor and more than 70 live rounds of bullets from a rented house at Kammalankunnu near Thamarassery in Kozhikode district.The raid was conducted by the local police on Tuesday (September 1, 2026) night based on a tip-off about the suspected storage of smuggled liquor and ammunition. The house was found locked when the police reached the premises.The bullets, believed to be of a type used for licensed shooting and hunting, were recovered along with the liquor after an hour long search inside the rooms. No firearms were found in the house, the police said.A native of Nellipoyil, who recently took the house on rent, was taken into custody for interrogation. Police sources said the source of the ammunition and liquor remained unclear even after collecting his statements.A senior police officer said the liquor was stocked in the rental house with a clear purpose for illegal sale. Police would also check whether the bullets were purchased and stored for hunting purpose, he added.A case has been registered under variois sections of the Kerala Abkari Act and the Arms Act as part of the continuing probe.
