Image credit: W1terr Published Oct 19, 2026, 11:31 AM EDT Sam Woods is TheGamer’s Senior Reporter. He’s been in games journalism since 2020 and has undertaken a variety of roles in that time. These have included roles such as SEO Editor, Managing Editor at DualShockers, and Global Head of Gaming, and he's also been seen on the BBC. He was promoted to the Senior Reporter position in 2025 following a series of high-quality reports and exclusives for TheGamer. Since 2020, Sam has written over 3,000 articles and specializes in telling the stories of the people behind the games. He’s interviewed the biggest game directors, some of the industry’s top talents, told the stories of how indie games came to be, and spoken to players about what really makes them tick. He’s also interviewed some of the world’s biggest musical artists to find out how the medium has inspired their work, and TV and Film actors about their roles in video game adaptations. He even hosted a PAX panel in 2021 and made a documentary in 2024 surrounding the creation of a Disney game. Alongside this, Sam focuses on breaking news. He got the scoop on Perfect Dark’s cancellation, provided context on some AI drama, and revealed that Lady Dimitrescu’s actress would love to step back into the character’s giant shoes. These articles have been picked up by the biggest gaming sites, including IGN, GameSpot, and PC Gamer. He also loves to dive into the numbers behind the games. Sam’s journey in games journalism has taken him all over the world. He’s covered Gamescom in Germany, Summer Game Fest in Los Angeles, and Tokyo Game Show in Japan, each on three occasions. He’s been learning Japanese since 2024 with the intention of identifying and translating Japanese-language news and bringing it to English-language audiences first, something he’s done countless times. Sam’s first review was 2020’s Battletoads reboot, and he’s since reviewed games in The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario, and Pokemon franchises. Sign in to your TheGamer account When Crimson Desert previews dropped earlier this year, it felt like mine was by far the most negative. I didn't hate what I played, but I certainly felt the game tried too much without actually mastering anything. There was one thing that vividly stuck in my memory from that preview, though: I could pick up animals, namely a cat, and bring them on my adventures with me. It's the most unnecessary feature in a game, but one I adored because animals are precious, and you should be free to pick them up and take them around with you. Clearly, I'm not the only one who thinks that, as one Skyrim fan has created a mod that lets you pick up cats and carry them across the world. You Can Now Pick Up Cats (And Chickens) While Playing Through Skyrim Image credit: W1terr Skyrim players love to create their own challenges. With the game still as popular as it was when it launched 15 years ago, players are finding new ways to keep it feeling fresh, and this new mod can certainly help. Created by modder W1tter and shared on Nexus Mods, Cat Carry allows you to do exactly what it says on the tin: carry cats. "Hold 'E' on a house cat and your character kneels, scoops it up with both hands and carries it in their arms," the mod's description reads. "Walk around with it and still open doors; hold Activate again to set it down gently. Includes an optional Piglet add-on." There is now absolutely a world where somebody is going to try to become the first player to complete the game carrying a cat from start to finish. This mod is one of the most wholesome in what is the most modded game in history. On Nexus Mods alone, players have created over 210,000 different mods. This far eclipses the second-place title, another Bethesda gem, Fallout 4, which only has 77,400 mods. Fallout: New Vegas is third, with 42,200 mods, and Stardew Valley is fourth, with 34,600 mods. I'm now imagining a world of Khajiit carrying little kitties around.
