The nameplate has become one of the most important models in Skoda's history and remains the brand's global bestseller.The first modern-generation Octavia rolled off the production line at Skoda's Mlada Boleslav plant in the Czech Republic on September 3, 1996. Since then, almost 7.9 million units of the Octavia have been produced across four generations.The modern Octavia was developed after Skoda became part of the Volkswagen Group in 1991. The company also revived the Octavia name, which had previously been used for a model produced between 1959 and 1971. Development of the modern version began in 1992, with the car designed under Dirk van Braeckel, then Skoda's head of design.The first-generation Octavia was unveiled as a liftback in April 1996 and offered a 528-litre boot. The Combi estate version followed in 1998, while an all-wheel-drive variant was introduced in 1999. Skoda added the first Octavia RS in 2000, giving the range a sportier performance-focused variant. The first generation recorded 1.44 million units in production, with some versions continuing to be built until 2010 even after the second-generation model was introduced in 2004.The second-generation Octavia brought more interior space, with boot capacity increasing by 32 litres. It also introduced new technologies, including the DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission. Production ended in 2013 after 2.6 million units were built. The third-generation Octavia was produced between 2012 and 2020. It featured a lighter body, updated TSI and TDI engines and driver assistance technologies previously found in higher-segment vehicles. A GreenLine version was also introduced, using features such as brake energy recuperation and low-rolling-resistance tyres to improve efficiency.A major facelift in 2017 brought split headlights, updated infotainment systems and additional driver assistance features.The current fourth-generation Octavia made its debut in November 2019 in liftback and Combi body styles. It received an update in 2024, bringing improved connectivity and safety features, including up to 10 airbags and Attention and Drowsiness Assist.The Octavia is currently produced in Mlada Boleslav and Kvasiny in the Czech Republic, as well as Kostanay in Kazakhstan.
