Sketching Japan, an exhibition by B Ganesh Babu, underway at Bengaluru’s IIWC

Fukushima Palace by B Ganesh Babu | Photo Credit: Special Arrangement ‘Sketching Japan – An Architect’s Visual Journey by B Ganesh Babu,’ reads the sign at the Indian Institute of World Culture’s (IIWC) art gallery. “I am an architect by profession, and sketching has long been my passion,” says Ganesh, as he shares anecdotes behind the 35 sketches on display.The show is a culmination of two of Ganesh’s passions — sketching and everything Japanese, the language, the landscape and more.“I was born in South Bengaluru and grew up studying in Basavanagudi. My interest in sketching began when I was in school. I enjoyed drawing cartoons, and a few of my early efforts were published in Kannada newspapers and magazines. Looking back, I feel fortunate that this early interest eventually led me towards architecture, a profession that gave me the opportunity to combine creativity, observation and sketching,” says Ganesh.After nearly four decades of professional practice in architecture and interior design, Ganesh ensures he takes the time out to relax and sketch. “I enjoy sketching places that interest me. I call these my ‘Drawelogues’ — a visual travelogue of the places I have visited and the impressions they left on me.” B Ganesh Babu | Photo Credit: Special Arrangement Ganesh’s interest in the Japanese language gave him all the more reason to visit Japan. “Being able to read and speak a little Japanese made the experience particularly enjoyable. I was deeply impressed by the country’s development, its culture, traditions and the way its rich heritage exists alongside modern life. During the trip, I began to sketch the places and moments that caught my attention. Over time, these sketches came together into a visual narrative of Japan,” he explains.After sketching so many pieces, Ganesh wanted to share his work and that materialised with Sketching Japan at IIWC.“Next, I wish to explore and sketch places closer home, such as Bengaluru’s temples, discovering their architectural beauty as well as the stories, history and memories associated with them.”Ganesh generally works with pen and ink on paper as well as digital media. Two recent sketches that are dear to him are renderings of the Tulasi Thota, a Krishna temple in Bengaluru and the Fukushima Palace in Japan.“One connects me to the heritage of my city, while the other brings back memories of a country that has deeply fascinated me,” he says, hoping to bring out a book of his sketches some day.
