Six designs that freshen up the humble toothbrush

After Dyson recently hit headlines with its tech-driven toothbrush, we revisit eight projects from the Dezeen archives that add polish to the everyday dental tool. Accessories by Landor & Fitch Accessories is a collection of toothbrush add-ons, designed specifically for people with dexterity challenges. It has more than 142 designs, including handles with chunky grips and ridged edges, which make them easier to hold. They also come in a range of textures and colours, which lend them a decorative, homeware-like appearance. The designer said the project was sparked by accessible design research that had found "users hacking toothbrushes in functional but extremely uncomfortable ways". Find out more about Accessories › Sustainable Sonic Toothbrush by Suri One of the most recognisable toothbrush brands on the market today, Suri was launched to tackle global dependence on plastic toothbrushes. In 2022, it released the Sustainable Sonic Toothbrush, with an aluminium body and plant-based brush head that are both recyclable. More recently, it updated its design with Suri 2.0, which has features such as a pressure sensor and wireless induction charging. "We wanted to create a brush that champions design, performance and sustainability without compromise," Suri told Dezeen. Find out more about Sustainable Sonic Toothbrush › Benjamin Brush by BleepBleeps and MAP Designed to make brushing teeth more enticing for children, the Benjamin Brush featured an integrated speaker that played music for the recommended two-minute brushing time. The prototype product had a blue silicone body, designed to be easily held, and interchangeable "pom pom" brush heads that added a playful look. Find out more about Benjamin Brush › Dyson CameraJet by Dyson Dyson's first dental hygiene product is an electric, tech-driven toothbrush with an integrated mouthwash jet. Named the Dyson CameraJet, the product has a camera set near the oscillating brush head, which identifies gaps between teeth and negates the need for flossing. "By combining a camera, machine learning, precision fluid dynamics, advanced brushing technologies, connectivity and WiFi, Dyson CameraJet introduces an entirely new way to keep your mouth healthy," said founder James Dyson. Find out more about Dyson CameraJet › Misoka by Kosho Ueshima The Misoka toothbrush is designed to clean teeth without toothpaste. Instead, users just need to dip the brush in water. This is because the bristles are coated in nano-sized mineral ions that, after being loosened by water, are transferred to the teeth. These ions are then able to remove stains and form a protective coating on the enamel, according to its creator, Kosho Ueshima. Find out more about Misoka › Ara by Kolibree The Ara toothbrush was launched in 2017 with integrated artificial intelligence, intended to help users improve their oral health. A low-energy Bluetooth connection linked it to an app, which displayed brushing data including frequency, duration and areas covered.
