In a shocking incident, a minor girl threatened to kill her 3-year-old nephew at knife point and locked the house from inside with a demand for a particular brand of new mobile phone in Sivakasi on Thursday night. After four hours of struggle, the parents could rescue the child only after the police helped them get a brand new mobile phone by requesting the owner of mobile phone showroom to open the shop late on Thursday night. The police said that the girl, who had lost her mother, was being brought up by her aunt. A class 10 drop-out, the girl on Thursday night, suddenly picked a quarrel with her aunt demanding a new mobile phone.“She locked herself inside the house along with her nephew and threatened to slit his throat if her demand was not met immediately,” a police officer said.As the helpless family members started running up and down around the house, neighbours alerted the police about the commotion.A team of police from Sivakasi East police station limits rushed to the spot. But, the police found that the girl was stubborn about her demand. However, they could do very little in rescuing the child as the door and windows were locked from inside.“At one point, she started to set deadline for the mobile phone to be handed over,” a police officer said. The police then sensed her violent mood and did not want to take any chance with the life of the child.Later, the Sivakasi Deputy Superintendent of Police, V. Anilkumar, instructed the police to hunt for the particular brand of mobile phone in the town. By then, it was too late in the night and all the mobile phone shops had been closed down. The police started to make calls to the owners of mobile phone shops.“We tried with five owners, but none of them had this particular model in their showroom. At last, we found one showroom had the mobile phone, but the owner had left for Madurai to attend a condolence,” the officer said. The police explained to him the dire need for the mobile phone and made a request to shop-owner to return immediately to his shop to save the life of the child. The girl was so adamant that she refused to open the door even after the unboxed mobile phone was taken to her house. As a precautionary measure, the police also took with them a man from the showroom to correctly operate the new phone. But, the girl refused to open the door.“She made a video call to her aunt and ensured that no policeman was outside the house. Only after she was convinced that the police had left the spot, she opened the door and phone was handed over to her,” the officer said. The child was rescued without any injury. The police have advised the family members to give proper counselling to the girl.
