The Congress has alleged that the incident was indicative of a wider attempt to remove eligible voters from the electoral rolls. | Photo Credit: File photo The Congress party has raised objections to a notice issued by election authorities to the grandson of former Member of Parliament B.M. Mujahid and KPCC office-bearer Shahjaman Mujahid amid the ongoing SIR (Special Intensive Revision) of electoral rolls. In a press release, Vidyanagar Block Congress Committee president Rajat Ullagaddimath said that Mr. Mujahid, who is also the co-convener of the KPCC Protocol Committee and the party’s Booth Level Agent-2 (BLA-2) at polling station No. 170 in the Hubballi-Central Assembly constituency, had been issued a notice reportedly over discrepancies relating to family mapping in the electoral records. As per the notice, Mr. Mujahid’s name does not appear in the family mapping records. However, the authorities have not found any problem with the names of his father Rizwan, mother and younger brother who reside in the same house with him, and their names appear in the draft roll.In the press release, the party has alleged that the incident was indicative of a wider attempt to remove eligible voters from the electoral rolls and expressed concern that members of marginalised communities and supporters of Opposition parties could be affected during the electoral roll revision process. The party termed the alleged exercise as an attempt at “vote theft” and questioned whether ordinary voters could be adequately protected if the electoral rights of an officially designated booth-level representative were being questioned. The Congress urged the Election Commission and election officials to ensure that the electoral roll revision process was conducted in a transparent and impartial manner and that no eligible voter was deprived of the right to vote without due process.
